A very good friend from my Army days just gave me a Model 1840 Infantry NCO sword, no scabbard and I have a couple of questions. The sword was made by and marked on the left side "Emerson & Silver, Trenton, NJ", with the Emerson in an arc. On the right side is "U.S. DFM (Inspector Marks ?) and 1862". The guard has a hole in it, which looks like a knife or another sword was stuck thru it (that is my story and I am sticking to it!). The blade is in good shape and appears blued so my questions are:

1. Would the blade have been blued originally?

2. Is is possible to get a reproduction scabbard for this sword?

Thanks,
John

The blade would have been polished bright, not blued. Emerson & Silver used a black painted steel scabbard for their nco and I don't know of anyone reproducing them. Bigmick45 on ebay has some leather ones but I can't be sure how well they will fit your sword. The Windlass reproduction uses a steel scabbard as well but it is not of the historic form. You may occasionally see a period scabbard without the sword.

Here is my Ames and a very short Roby.

I have one of those in v.g. shape with a S&K tang stamp. German I believe. Any idea on the value? Thanx--KV

In the years since made, (if real) it could have been blued by a previous owner.
Try Dixie Gun Works for a original or reproduction scabbard.
