Model 301 Stockman - Is this normal?

All,

I've been lurking here for a few months and decided to make this question my first post.

Last week I ordered one of the Chairman Series medium Stockman folders (Model 301CWS-B) from Amazon. I got it late last week and immediately noted that a small but still significant (and dangerous) portion of the edge of the spey blade is exposed when the blade is in the closed position. Here you can see it just peeking above the handle slab:

In over 30 years of knife collecting, including a goodly number of stockman style knives from makers like Case, Schrade and Uncle Henry I have never seen a pocket knife where a portion of the edge is exposed when the blade is in the closed position.

Thinking it was simply a single knife that slipped past the QC guys at the factory I returned it to Amazon for an exchange. I got the replacement knife today and was disappointed to see it has the exact same issue. I'm now tempted to believe that the exposed spey blade is simply how Buck makes these things.

Before I send this knife off to Buck asking them to correct what I consider an unsafe blade arrangement I want to ask if anyone on the forum has seen other Buck folders with the same issue. Is this normal for their stockman-style knives?

Thanks in advance. I really enjoy the discussions on this forum.

It is normal for Buck stockmans. I know it looks a bit odd, but I have carried 303's and 301's for years and I have never cut my pinkie on the exposed edge of the spey. I have never noticed any dulling of the spey. It just looks a bit odd.

Totally normal, since you would never really use the knife with the other two blades open at the same timeand I've never had it cause me a problem, but I admit it does "look" bad.

I have three 301s and a couple 303s. Its not an issue with only one blade open. Does look odd compared to other stockman.

Thanks everybody for your replies. I guess I'll hang onto it. It is an otherwise very nice knife and feels good in the hand.

Seems like I drop by lately after everything is already said....but that is a good thing....sort of a "We the people, for the people".

Here is photo of several 301s of recent issue. As stated the spey is above the blade well. This has been questioned and discussed in other posts. It seems that the "pinkie" cutting tip is sort-of protected by the other blades being closed. There sometimes is a very slight variation from knife to knife as it can be adjusted , as David suggests, and may be so during final hand fitting assembly. In the front is a new 303 Chairman, the new model with the signature on the reverse and a blue shield on the front. Note its spey is below liner top. Which is the case with other years 303 in yellow, Dymondwood and Chairmans. Go figure?.

IF you are so inclined to self medicate your problems, the heel of the tang can be 'LIGHTLY" honed down to lower spey tips on your 301s.
Do not use a bench grinder, a small file or the end of a sharpening stone will work. Work slowly and carefully. Only remove very little at a time. WARNING this will make your spey need slighty more pull to open and your nail nic will be lowered. Too much and you will cause the blade edge to hit the spring and there goes you good sharpening job......... Go slow, you will need to keep your nic above the edge and the blade off the spring.

Otherwise just get over the way it looks from the factory.......300

PS. All my 301s look new because I never carry one, I go from 303 in the pocket to a 307 on the belt.

I carry my yellow 301 all the time and it's the same way.It looks a little strange but it just makes the nail nick easy to access and never has been a problem.

I hadn't noticed this before. The two of mine are the same way. No problems. I was carrying a 301 daily at work, but my employer is cracking down on personal pocket knives...even had to sign a "no personal pocket knife" acknowledgement. I had to switch to a tactical blade!
