model 497

The 497 I have measures right about 5/32" thick at the thickest part. I've never used it for anything, but it feels good in the hand.
 
Ditto what Dave said. I just bought one and haven't used it but the handles, weight, and balance are all good for me. I feel pretty certain the blade profile will make an excellent skinner.

My bet is Evil Eyed Earl has used his in the field but we haven't heard from him lately.
Maybe soon. This fall its a certainty that we'll hear some about it.

I say if you like the way it feels in your hand and the balance go for it.
