Krangle1,
This knife was sold in 1979, and is one of the first engraved knives Buck produced. It is one of a set of four knives with different pictures of horses engraved on the blade, the other 3 being a 703, 705 and 709. The issue price of your knife was $68, but the collector value suffers due to the high volume amount of 5500 pieces produced. These knives rarely bring more than $40 on Ebay, and I have bought them for a little as $25. Still a great looking knife, and my wife loves her set!! Peace,

Mike is right except for a couple of small points; this knife is etched by Aurum etchings, not engraved, and the etching is very deep. A deep etch is more appealing than a surface etch. I seem to recall that the 701 came out in 1977 or 1978 (not very important) but it was one of a series of four knives; they were not offered by Buck as a set. A dealer had to be on his toes to get all four knives with the same serial number. They all had the 700 series tang stamp but were sold as the 800 series, your knife would thus be an "801". I recently traded an 801 to a Western store and they sold it for $125 to a customer who was not a knife collector, just a horse enthusiast.
I think your knife is in the wrong box; each box had the same print inside as the etched scene. The scene on the box in your posted picture is for the 803 Colt. I'll bet it doesn't fit into the cutout made for it in the box.

Damn Vern,
You are right it is etched and not engraved. Really sharp on catching the other about the scene on the box (actually a jewel case) being wrong. As for the price, there is always an unusual circumstance. Vern, your knives always bring top$$. <b> Hey Vern, wanna sell my 703 Mastadon Ivory scaled knife for me, it came from the custom shop, and I'll pay your fees. (I also have the 507 in Mas. Ivory). ;) ;)
