Model T spike hawk

Found a leaf spring in an old steel dump on our land that I assume is from a Model T, it was in a pile with all model T bits and pieces. Anyway, a piece of it is now a scary spike hawk. The haft is a piece of an old axe handle 20 inches long, wrapped in rawhide, brass tacked, sheath to come. The blade is 4 1/2 inches from the haft, the spike is 2 7/8ths with sharpened edges. I used the axe handle backwards because it really balanced the feel. Scary sharp, chops saplings really well, throws perfect.:D
I'm probably not finished yet so I'll post finished with sheath pics tomorrow.

Best regards

Robin

I'm not automatically drawn to hawks, but that is primal! I followed the link because of the Model T connection - my dad loved that auto (plus the Model A). But the photos speak to its power and grace.

Thanks.

Quiet a throwing hawk you have there Robin! I love the primitive look of it and your ulu. Takes my mind to a whole different era.

That’s amazing. It goes to show that the ingredients are a big part of the end product. I love that the simple blade shape and handle. Are you going to make a sheath for that axe ?

Hi Robin ,
I think old Henry would be happy you have given his steel a second life
so to speak nice work .
Chris .

That's is pretty darn cool! I love the simplicity, yet refined style. I would love to make something like this, but how do you secure the head? Is it pinned as well as tied? Something else? Did you just use the wedge slot on that handle? You have peaked my interest in 'hawks now!

Steve, thanks bud, coming from it means a great deal.

Edwin, thanks for your comments, the sheath is posted in the original post.

Xander, I didn't use the old wedge slot because I cut the handle off below the axe head. I cut a new slot 1/4 inch wide and fitted a piece in, the "tang" going through the haft is 1/2 in narrower than the spike and the blade so it over laps the handle below the head and above the head the "wedge" locks it in place. Seems pretty well loocked in place, lots of epoxy, the space above the head is pinned. I cut a 6 inch poplar down with it today, worked great.

Randy, thanks for turning me into a scary person ;-))) It's yours and Eds fault. The rawhide is actually very traditional west African goat skin, it has a real nasty looking inside. The problem is there's hair on it so I shave it ;-( It's the offcuts from reheading a couple of early djembes (never again)))).

Best regards
