Model With Strongest Detent

Hi all, I love my 7 but it can be shaken open, so it's technically a gravity knife. Are there any models that won't open like this? The shorter the blade the better. Thanks

Any mid sized folder except for an auto (ironic, right?) can be shaken open, if done right.

Lotta gray there. The ability to class a knife as a gravity knife truly lies in the technique possessed by the cop. Stories have happened.

However, If your 7 is loose enough that it just falls open, it either needs adjusting by you, or EKI. It should stay closed as securely as a Buck 110.

Which can be shaken open.

Some interesting food for thought.

Regards.

I agree, but with a few Seven's in my experience, the Flipper has a noticeably firmer, crisper detent (single "conventional" detent on this one).

Out of curiosity, OM, have you handled more than one flipper 7 to confirm if it's unique that model versus unique to your specimen?

Only mentioning it since the knives are built by hand in batches, and can exhibit some inconsistency. Something for the OP to also consider.

Thx.

PS Holy crap i keep my knives in that same exact case. Did you steal yours from a dental trade show too?

A couple. In general, for a flipper to work well a crisp detent is pretty necessary (as Hinderer can tell you ;) ).

Flipper 7 I had had a stronger detent than most emersons as well, just to support OM

Most emersons are made with a detent separate from the lockbar. Does yours have this? Its on the solid liner. Not the lock bar. Bend it out a little, see if that works.

How easy is it to bend? Is it possible it will break?

The knife needs to be taken apart first. Get a small flat blade screwdriver. Lightly pry it up just a little. It shouldnt break. This is the whole reason Mr emerson designed the knife that way, so the detent can be adjusted without messing with the lockbar.

OK I'll try that, thanks!

I came to this thread to see what others' detent experiences were and turns out, I am not alone. I have had 3 Emersons over the years and just sold my last. I have a 2000 Commander that my wife got me for our first anniversary that has been a disappointment from day 1. I have a Benchmade CQC-7 that is AWESOME and just recently got a Horseman that is one of the biggest wastes of money I have ever spent on a knife. Fit and finish is a joke, loved the design, blade, style and all, but the deal breaker is the absolute lack of a detent. The ball and the hole are not even remotely in the same plane. I had to tighten the pivot so tight just to keep it from opening in my pocket that it was useless. So I called Emerson about warranty work and explained how disappointed I was and was told they would fix it for free, just pay both way shipping and insurance. OVER $25 FOR THIS. I already spent close to $200 on a knife and they don't back it up enough to pay for the shipping to fix their piece of junk. I sold it and let the next guy deal with it (at a big loss I might add). It is pretty sad that Emerson Designs made by other mfr's are worlds above his own product. I have bought $15 chinese rip-offs that are worlds above in quality than this crap, Horseman and Commander both. My Commander is so out of center that I can't stand to look at it, let alone carry it. I would sell it too if it wasn't a gift from my wife. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Rant over.

How hard to do you have to shake it?

I can get the blade on my Mini 7 to come out, but only if I "throw" it downwards as hard as I can -- like throwing a fastball, except I don't let go at the end. ;) That seems wildly unlikely to happen during normal use, so it doesn't worry me.

I'm not saying you/anyone else shouldn't worry about detent, just curious about the level of shake involved.

So 4 posts since you joined in December 2013, all four in this subforum bashing Emersons. Good thing for you I'm not a moderator.

I think he is just pissed of at Emersons.

I have had some bad Emersons and some good ones. Even Hinderers, Striders ect. have thier issues. My goal is to have a centered blade, early lockup, fair detent and no lock sick. It is hard to find a knife of any manufacturer that puts out perfect knives every single time and that makes the search more fun.
