I have have had a few members ask me about my fire kits. I would like to start by saying like most of my kit, my fire making materials change all of the time. What I carry is dependent on my goals for the trip, if I am teaching, and the season. These kits I cover here are pretty typical though.

The kit on the left is my mobile friction fire kit. The one on the right has modern tinders and traditional flint & steel.

This friction fire kit contains-

Take down bow
Extra 880 cord string
Whitetail antler bearing block
2 Velvetleaf spindles
2 Basswood hearth boards

Thanks to abo4estr's "Flint and Steel University" I have beefed up my flint & steel portion of my kit.

Char punkood
Char cotton webbing
Punkwood and Tinder fungus
Basswood bark tinder bundle
Steel striker
Basalt, and local quartz
Tin for charring
Charred cotton webbing

This section of the kit is firesteel friendly, more modern, and includes a few alternate ignition sources.

Pitch wood
UCO Storm proof matches
Wax impregnated cardboard
Trioxane
Flattened candle stub
Back up firesteel
Magnifying lenses
Cotton balls and petroleum jelly
Small lighter

The box and the tinder bundle fit into an external pouch on my pack. In my opinion your fire kit should be readily accessible.

You used cotton webbing for char cloth? That's pretty cool. How do you rate char cloth compared to other tinders? I've never made or used it before.

In my opinion, char cloth is for demonstration and fun. There are many other man-made tinders that are superior to a charred material.
