Having started learning about the present and past range, I would appreciate your advice for a EDC with a 3" ish plain blade.
My initial investigation pointed to Caly, but couldn't find one that I could afford on the net.

hold out for a few more months for the new caly 3....it's going to be great. In the mean time, save up. I think it's going to launch at 60 dollars. I think most of us who have been through the penny pinching side of knife aquiring would agree, it's really worth it to save up and get what you want.

Also, since you're from the UK, a lockless Calypso will enter regular production, the UK Penknife. Just download the catalog supplement in the catalog downloading section from the Spyderco website.

As you can see, it's basically a lockless and tweaked Calypso jr.

Thank you for that. $60 is all right for a quality knife, no problem with that. I was thinking of prices like ebay's items 330002804790 or 230003484013. And the last one is still going! Is it just me who's out of touch?
Where can I find info on caly 3?

It looks like a beautiful knife. However the lack of lock may make it more legal (and with new laws starting in Scotland, even that is doubtfull) but also a lot more dangerous on my fingers...
How does a salt 1, for instance, compare to a caly?

Salt I and Delica are both about the same size as the Caly Jr., but lack the 50/50 choil which some (myself included) find beneficial. Each of the three has its advantages. The H-1 steel of the Salt I is impervious to rust. The latest incarnation of the Delica features all screw construction, which some favor, and a clip that can be postioned for tip up or tip down carry right or left handed. The Calypso Jr. has the choil, is feather light, and uses a full flat grind that many feel makes it the best "cutter" of the three. The "older" grey FRN VG-10 version of the Calypso Jr. can often be found, and the prices asked for them are a lot more reasonable than those being asked right now for the burgundy FRN ZDP-189 version.

Thank you for your feedback on those knives.

Is that to say that this seller is...misinformed? and that the only ZDP-189 calypso has a burgundy FRN?

I believe that only the ZDP one comes in burgundy....

I believe the UKPK can be bought now from a few different stores. The lack of the lock I don't like, but you must also consider the choil. Choils and flippers offer lots of protection against lock failure (or just normal closing in this case).

You still don't want to do chopping with it, etc, but something to think about.

To clear up confusion, the Caly 3, which will be based very closely on the UKPK, WILL have a lockback.

That seller may, or may not, have gotten "something" wrong, either the color and SKU #, or the steel.

The "original" 1999 version of the FRN Calypso Jr. had a black handle and a VG-10 blade. These came in both PE and SE, SKUs would be C52PBK and C52SBK respectively.

The first "sprint run" version had a grey handle and a VG-10 blade. There was a second, and possibly a third, "batch" of the grey ones, also with VG-10 blades. All were PE and the SKU was C52PGY

The most recent "sprint run" paired a ZDP-189 blade with a burgundy (more like raspberry sherbert really) handle. Again PE only on this one, and its SKU is C52PBRG.

BUT... there is another run of ZDP FRN Caly Jrs coming, this one an exclusive for one distributor, whom Spyderco has never named. I believe these will, like the originals, be black, so the seller may also just be advertising those a bit early, as they won't be out for a few months yet, IIRC. If that is the case, then perhaps the "E" in the SKU listed on that site stands for Exclusive. The best way to find out what that seller is offering, if you're really interested in one, is to make a phone call.

Thank you Deacon for info.
Since they are listed as "in stock", I would think mistake more than likely.
Thank you for helping me out
