I was perusing the Cold Steel website and noticed two of their products, the RPG and the Torpedo, which are throwing weapons. After watching this video I thought...I wonder how effective these tools would be in hunting rabbits and other small game, particularily in a survival situation.

The Torpedo would be really effective (depending how accurately you can throw it) because it weighs 2 lbs and even if you didn't stick the animal, the blunt force trama would probably kill or disable the animal.

The RPG is a lot lighter (less than a pound).

Here is the video

I can't think of any reason they wouldn't work. I'd probably put some brightly colored paint or something of the sort on there so I didn't lose the blasted thing. I'd also like to add that, although CS has taken a lot of flak for their vids and marketing, those guys sure do look like they're having a good time.

how much rebar can you buy for the price of one of those?

ten feet of 1/2" rebar is $4.45 at Lowe's. the RPG is 12" long. so if you have a hacksaw or angle grinder and a bench grinder you can make ten rough equivalents to the RPG for under 50¢ each. if you want it heavier they have 5/8" rebar and if you want it slightly lighter they have 3/8".

sure, the CS version might have better heat treat, be better steel and take less work.... but i sure wouldn't want to get hit with a homebrew version. :eek:

lol can you imagine how deep that 2 pound Torpedo would sink into soft ground? I've lost arrows in my back yard because they dive under the sod...

Hmmm...I think I have a couple 2 foot sections of rebar around somewhere...

Neat idea ,i've almost bought the RPG a few times.
I always end up buying another CS throwing knife instead (current tally is 8).
At least with a throwing knife you can still use it as a knife something you can't do with the Torpedo and RPG.
The Cold Steel True Flight throwing is actually a good low cost work knife ($20-$30).
The CS Bowie shaped thrower is just a little longer and heavier than the RPG and can be used as a knife as well.
I generally prefer the True Flight because the leather+paracord handle is more comfortable and the length is closer to the size on a regular fixed blade, (the bowie has a very long handle section and slippery but tough plastic slabs).
Still i know i will eventually buy some rpgs and possibly a Torpedo as well! lol.

I was thinking about that after reading the "throwing knives" thread yesterday.
I have a spool of "emergency orange" paracord. seems like you could make a tassel at one end which might help it fly straighter (like a fletch?)
and certainly couldn't hurt with the "losing it" problem.

If they make Blaze Orange Duracoat you could use that and refinish it. Something other than black. I would lose that the first time I used it. Id miss and the dang rabbit would sit there laughing at me cause I can't find it...

I have thrown the torpedo many times and it hits like the Hammer of Thor. I don't have any accuracy problems with it. My only cautionary note is to throw it with a relatively gradual rotation. A couple times I snapped my wrist a little too quickly on a throw and the trailing tip scratched my hand as it exited. Not badly, but something to avoid.

I tend to err on the side of caution. In some states these will be classified as prohibited weapons (same as throwing stars).

Indiana for instance:
IC 35-47-5-12
"Chinese throwing star" defined; related offenses
Sec. 12. (a) A person who:
(1) manufactures;
(2) causes to be manufactured;
(3) imports into Indiana;
(4) keeps for sale;
(5) offers or exposes for sale; or
(6) gives, lends, or possesses;
a Chinese throwing star commits a Class C misdemeanor.
(b) As used in this section, "Chinese throwing star" means a throwing-knife, throwing-iron, or other knife-like weapon with blades set at different angles.
As added by P.L.318-1985, SEC.2.

Not saying this is right or wrong, just "is". Some jurisdictions consider these prohibited weapons and concealed carry (even if just found in your pack or vehicle) carrys stiff penalties, fines or at the least a hassle. Check your State, county and city laws first.

'Tis better to beg forgiveness...

i'm just wondering if they started out practicing on the front lawn at Cold Steel's corporate headquarters. how many times did they have to chase one down the street?

That torpedo weighs in at two pounds,for the weight I'd rather pack a .22 pistol for rabbits. A rabbit stick made of wood has to weigh less,besides how are you planning to carry half a dozen of those things along with you? I'll opt for a less lethal,but less problematic rabbit stick. Besides who knows how many re takes it needed to make those videos?

No question those are workable...

But personally i dont think carrying them is wise use of space or weight in a survival or long durrattion camping pack. Rabbit sticks are usually...well...sticks. Those are free and abundant in theater.

No need to pack a few pounds of steel with only one or limited use - Bryan in on the right path with the .22 pistol idea:
* Ruger MKIII Standard 4" weighs 35oz unloaded. the polymer 22/45 version is only 30oz.
* Browning Buckmark URX comes in at 2lbs
* Ruger single Six weight in at 33oz for a 5" convertable.
* S&W K frame 617, 10 shot revolver weighs in at 39oz for the 4" version
* S&W J frame 317 Kit gun (8 shot) weighs a scant 13oz.

Basically, for the weight of a SINGLE CS 'Torpedo', you could take your pick of ANY 22 pistol - even the hulking 10 shot, full sized steel frame, S&W 617 revolver only a hair more in weight. Heck, i pack a 32 caliber Colt Police positive - its a scant 26oz, and can fire 32 long, 32 short, as well as 32acp.

With the combination of free abundant wooden rabbit sticks, and the abundance of light reliable pack guns in .22, i see zero reason for anything like the CS 'Torpedo' or 'RPG'.
