Does anyone make a modern set of fence pliers that aren't five pounds of useless weight? I have a tool that does nothing good, the concept is great, the reality sucks. A hammer, pliers, wire cutter, bottle opener, nail puller, kind of a step heavier than a SAK or Leatherman. Is there something out there?

Well, they're great on a trapline. Cutting twin loop chain and wire, pulling staples, dispatching critters, stripping tails.....

..and mending fences.

The trouble with fence pliers is that you're always an implement short, i.e., you can't stretch the wire tight and pound the staple home at the same time. You need a hammer or hatchet or another pair of fence pliers to go with them.

Seriously though, look for a pair of old pliers, there were some made that were a bit lighter than what's coming in from China now. Also, if you aren't actually fixing fence you may not need all the leverage from the long handles. Cut them down and save some weight.

Down at the farm we have half a dozen pairs which could be anything from 20-80 years old. All good and I always pick up two pairs when I'm fencing. The modern ones are nowhere near as good. I'll see if I can see makers names and take pics next time I;m there.
