Hello all,

I've been wanting to learn how to make some folding knives, and I have a question related to making a modern mid-lock lock back folder. What material is commonly used for the lockbar? I'm thinking I'll go with s30v or something similar for the blade. I was thinking of picking something .010 or so thicker to make the lockbar to allow for some .005 thick washers on the blade sides. I was just going to go with the same type of steel as the blade for the lock bar, but I wanted to check with those experienced to see if I should be using something else. Also, what HRC should the lock bar be hardened too in relation to the blade? I would think similar if not the same.

I was watching a video by Andrew Demko talking about his Ad10m customs and he mentions using 17-4ph steel for the locks and magnacut for the blades, which sparked my curiosity.

Thanks in advance!

I've been building them for about 15 years. No one's brought one back yet.
Now that I've said that I'll get one back next week😂
Awesome! Thanks for the info!

I've been wanting to learn how to make folders for a while now and I like the ambi nature of a lockback. Im going to try to make a one handed opening ti framed lockback for edc. I believe the triad lock patent expires this year as well, I was thinking of trying to make a large triad style lockback with a scandi grind and a contoured coke bottle handle once the patent expires. Something to put in a belt pouch or pack for when I dont want to carry a belt knife.
