Modern Scandi-knives?

Is there such a thing as a Modernized Production Scandi-Knife? (Not just basic plastics -like modern Mora knives.)

Does anyone know of scandi knives with Micarta handles, deep fitting kydex sheaths, full tangs, and premium steels? (the scandi-grind is a must to qualify)

If not production knives, are there any custom knife makers who specialize in this?

Thanks.

check the Wilderness and Survival Skills sub forum under the Community link....lots of custom makers.

Thanks guys. I am planning on going big for this one. I think it will fulfill that illusive place in all my knife collecting/accumulating that has never been filled. -The infamous "perfect knife" void. -For me anyhow.

Thanks

PS that Laconico looks really nice:thumbup:

I'm not even sure if this qualifies as a true bushcrafter because it's not a scandi grind. It does cut wood very well though.
No doubt that's a fine knife from Ray Laconico but if you are serious about a scandi grind Ray states it is not a scandi grind. Besides, that one has probably been sold.

In addition to makers here like Dan Koster and Fiddleback Forge look at Skookum Bush Tool, Bushcraft Northwest and try a google under "let's see your bushcraft knife" for some ideas. They come in all shapes and sizes but the "scandi grind" will narrow it down. You may want to define scandi grind since some makers define the term differently.

Here's a search of threads with "bushcraft" titles from W&SS for you to browse through.

and a thread from Custom & Handmade knives.

I just picked up my first scandi, its a Buscrafter by Dan Koster. I have to admit, it has quickly become my favorite wood working blade. It is a full tang, micarta scales, and its in CPM 3V steel. It is an awsome blade. I brought out about 7 custom blades tonight, and after trying them all, its the one that my wife liked using the best while doing some carving.

Check with Koyote...I think he does a Scandi. & you might also check with Stomper (JK handmade knives).

Keep an eye on the Koster sub-forum. There should be some unclaimed bushcraft knives being listed from the last run. I think from a bang for your buck perspective it's hard to beat Dan's CPM-3V bushcraft knife for what he is asking. I have two of them and they are outstanding.

Hi Pekka !

Some very nice knives on your site .

Surprisingly, I can't seem to find a pic of my latest Bushcraft knife in kydex. *shrug*

Well, here's what they are like:

(the above are O1 prototypes, but the same thing is being made in CPM3V)

defaultuser - Ray's knife is a beauty! But it's not a scandi-grind.

There are plenty of knifemakers doing scandi grinds....with a wide variety of styles. Get one of each and try 'em all out. :D

Dan

The 2009 Bushcraft knife is exactly what I want :).

I was going to email you a quick question, but Ill just ask it here:

What is the approximate waiting time after I pay the $65 deposit?

I saw your order list which seems a little full. Can you ballpark it for me?

Thanks.

You mentioned modern production knives, Spyderco has that covered with their Bushcraft model

haven't read much about it, though.

Don't immediately discount the Mora knives, they have a much larger selection than just the old plastic handled ones. If you head over to Ragweed Forge you'll see a huge selection. I love my #711, has a more full, rubbery grip than the classic clipper type. Slightly longer blade. Crap sheaths, but it's a stinking $12 knife with a very quality blade, so make your own for another $20 or find a huge selection of aftermarket ones online :)

Here are my Moras, the #711 is the all black handle in the front

Not the prettiest knives, but they do their job, and I've used them in the sheaths they come in for a bit of hiking/camping, with no problems at all. They're definitely users.

I know Dan over at Dozier Knives has a Bushcraft prototype that he has been working on. If it makes its way into production it will be a sweet little knife.

"Micarta handles, deep fitting kydex sheaths, full tangs, and premium steels?"

Micarta - Check
Kydex - One of the best
Full Tang - Check
Premium Steel - It is Bob's D2 ;)

I hold Mora knives in high regard. My first knife was a Mora -red wooden handle with a laminated blade (my personal favorite -I think it was an SL-1). I also have some of their modern styles -the 711 and 731 which have decent tangs. I have the sports knife as well. I agree, Mora knives are great.:)

Aside from Mora knives I have A Brusletto and a Helle -which I like as well.

After trying out different styles of knives (non-scandi) I always come back to the scandi styles. I would like to buy one that will be the "be all end all scandi knife" -for me of course, and what Dan Koster is making is exactly what I have been thinking about.

Oh, and that Spyderco looks really nice
