Modification of R.A.M Hawk Lock?

I just got my RAM and was curious if anyone else has removed one of the springs in the lock mech to make it easier to close. I found a youtube vid a while back where some guy did this. I did it today just to see and it does make the blade easier to close one handed. Im not sure yet if Ill keep it like this, but since it was so easy to do... why not try it? The open action doesnt have the same snap as with 2 springs, but it still works well...

I did it once to see if it would work. It does, but the feel isn't quite as nice as a properly broken-in lock. It's confidence inspiring to think that one spring could completely stop functioning without affecting the knife.

This is the second time I've sene someone post about the lock being "hard to close" , are you serious ?

Unless mine is different from anyone else's I fail to see how the lock can be hard to disengage at all , unless you have absolutly no strength in your thumb...

And then , why would anyone want the lock to disenage easier ? the lock is what keeps the very sharp blade from cutting you.

I took one out experimenting like you and it never got put back in. In fact I don't have a clue where the spring is now and I wish I did. The other day I was messing around and got the knife to fail a fairly light spine whack. That made me want to put it back in.

My knife was pretty stiff when it was new. Obviously it was stiff enough that I wanted it easier to open. Similar to the difference between the BB lock and the AXIS lock. I much prefer the easier to use AXIS lock. I guess that makes me a weak wuss or something because that is what I like.

Well , "what you like" caused your knife to fail a spine whack.

Trade off's.. ;)

All the RAMs I've had have been easy enough to open, never saw any reason to mod them.

FlaMtnBkr, I've had Kershaw send me out parts before. Drop them an email, I think you'll find they'll be happy to oblige you.

I've never felt that the hawk lock had to much spring tension, however I do feel that the RAM hawk lock is best with a little chamfering on the g10 around the lock. This gives you a much better grip on the lock. Its pretty easily done with a dremel.

Phillip dobson: Do you use a dremel to chamfer the area around the hawk lock when you make those sweet scales for the RAM?

Must be girlymans.;):D

I use a very sharp chisel and finish it up with a sandpaper wrapped finger. It's actually pretty quick with some practice. I suck at using dremels.

That sounds like an oxymoron to me?:p

I've got 2 RAMs and neither one has felt like the lock is too stiff.

Actually, I never said the lock is hard to close, I was just asking if anyone had done the mod I had seen in one of the reviews on youtube. Sometimes my thumb slides on the release making it not open as quick. If I push too hard then my thumb rubs the G-10 adding resistance. I may try to chamfer the area around the lock, and maybe smooth out the G10 just around that area. It would have been nice if the lock slider had the stepped ramp like shown in the prototype photos.

I see what you mean. I wasn't trying to be offensive I didn't understand what you fully meant. In using mÝ RAM I have often wondered if having the lock where it is could accidently disengage when using the knife in an aggressive cutting manner. Having been bit twice by my RAM I would hate to have a real bad cut , that blade is a true slicer ! :)

I put the spring back and do like the action better. I might take a dremmel and enhance the texture on the thumb release. I guess my fingers are just too smooth to to get a perfect grip.

My RAM also drew some blood on me yesterday. Yes, VERY sharp.

Haha that cracked me up. Smooth fingers!

Thanks phillip for the know how on the lock modification. I've never thought about using a chisel for such work but I can see how that would work good if it was real sharp. Thanks.
