Modifications and Warranty

Well it's worth a try. Do any of you hogs know the answer to this? If a Busse blade has been modified into a clip point by a known knife maker. And the known maker claims he kept the grinding heat low so as to not effect the hardness/temper of the blade... Is that Busse now disqualified from the Busse warranty due to the modification?

I think I know the answer but thought I'd give it a shot. :(

If it is a user, then use it.

If you trust the fella that told you how it was done, use it.

These knives are way tough to hurt and you will never break one by accident without a hammer.

If it it a safe Queen then the warranty does not matter cause it won't get used.

Prolly the portion modified not covered, but for a user I for one would not worry, I would just use it!!

Thanks guys. Let me be a bit more specific. Someone contated me to see if I wanted to buy their modified BM-E because they have probably seen my threads stating how I am looking for E models. Anyway, he said it was modified to a clip point by Bill Seigel. I contacted Bill to inquire about his methods, as was suggested to me by a BF member ;) . Just to ensure that he has in fact done such modifications and in doing so that he took care to keep the temp low enough not to mess with the hardness/temper.

He confirmed everything and told me I could buy the blade with confidence. The pics I have been sent are awesome. Just some light wear on the coating near the blade. This will me a hard user so that's not a problem. I was just curious about the warranty.

The only problem I have right now is that my email server is doing matinance and I can not access the seller's email to confirm and/or discuss things. For all I know PM or Terry have already bought it out from under me :(

Our warranty covers everything except modifications made outside of our shop. We can only warrant our own workmanship. BTW, Bill does some really nice work.

So what exactly is this saying?........
TO ME.... It says that if the tip breaks, it's would be your own fault, but I would think that Jerry would still cover the edge from excessive chipping, the handles falling off, etc.

With Bill doing the work, and it being a user, use the knife with confidence.

You will not break it, the warrenty will be a non-issue.

I have spent many days throwing Busse knives with thinned tips, way thinned, some times they bend a little or take a mild set.

Don't worry about it, they do not break.

A regular clip point on a BM-E is a non-issue for any use that I can imagine.

Won't hurt the knife, feel free to beat.

The clip point is not a thinned point, it is still full thickness, just a little more pointed.

And it will look cool no doubt!!

There are other issues but even this is an implicit warrenty. The maker who commerically did the modifications should warrenty the modifications and any effect they could have on the blade.

if it does break you can always call bussecombat to see if they'll look at it.

if it broke in the middle of the blade (away from the modification), or if a handle slab snaps off, it may still be under warantee. if it breaks at the tip, :(

What's all this talk about Busse's breaking and handles snapping off? Let's break this down.

1. Its a Busse and made of INFI.
2. It takes extremely high heat to ruin the temper, I believe 900+ degrees.
3. Adding a clip point to a BME should not drastically decrease its strength, depending on how it was done (saw or sander/grinder).
4. If its going to be a user, does this all really matter?
5. Its a Busse and made of INFI.
6. When has Busse NEVER stood behind one of its knives?
7. When has Jerry EVER left one of us out in the cold holding the short end?
8. Even Jerry states that Bill does nice work. If that's not an endorsement of Bill's competency then I don't know what is.
9. If you break it, you might be up there in terms of status with Cliff Stamp. Jerry might be brought to tears from the joy that someone has used his "children" for something else than holding down the velvet sheets in a safe.
10. ITS A BUSSE AND MADE OF INFI.

You guys are :D  .

Thanks guys. Like I said, I was just curious and you guys more than satisfied my curiosity. I can't imagine anything I would do to break the tip through use (not testing). The most stress I would probably cause is using it as an emergency prybay. I don't think that it would bother the BM. And Jerry's words regarding Bill are great indicators as well. :)

You're safe from me. :D Though it is the ultimate in irony that, when I read your post, I also had a pic open for a used Bill Siegle blade I was considering. Not the same one though.

Good luck, bro. It sounds neat!
