Greetings buck forum!

This is my first post on this forum and like every sub-forum on Bladeforums, from everything I've read and experienced, everyone seems more than friendly and willing to share their knowledge on knives.

If you could be so kind to give me your opinions on a Buck 110 I purchased at a flea market.

Is it a self modified knife, a knockoff or something else? I bought it because it caught my eye as it was different.

It's so dull it couldn't cut warm butter. It appears to be a 3 dot 110, so do you think I should send it to Buck for a spa treatment.

Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks,

Ken K

That's a 3-dot Buck 110. As for doing something with it — me, I'd keep it as-is but give it a decent edge. That's all.

Some previous owner has made a major cosmetic mod on it, and I'd leave that alone. But to be a knife it needs an edge, so —

1980 manufacture date. The wood, macassar ebony, looks to be in brilliant shape. The bolsters look to me like someone worked them so that they would resemble gold nuggets taken from a river. Bos heat treat, first year for this, and 440C blade steel = a terrific combination.

If you do decide to send it into the Buck spa, I would call them first to verify that they will indeed accept it as they sometime will not work on a modified knife.

Thanks for the comments.

If I sent it to the spa it would be to restore the blade, to sharpen, I'm not sure I could give it the sharpening it deserves and to do the correct thing with the point, as it's dull and rounded.

The blade looks like it could use some work, but the rest looks really nice to me.

Don't get it rebladed. The whole package is cool with all the scratches and wear on the blade included. Just go to a decent knifesmith or a sharpening service and have the edge reground and sharpened. Then use the living heck out of it!

I have say I agree with Zieg. I have a two-dot 112 that came to me with a slightly reprofiled blade. I could get it "updated," but I like having the original blade in it. Here it is with a two-dot 110, also with its original blade. All I did was sharpen them.

Clearly, it's your knife to do with as you wish. But so long as the blade can be made serviceable through sharpening, the knife will be useable and also preserve an integrity that makes it wholly an original.

Thanks for the comments!

I do have an edge pro apex, fairly new purchase, and after a little practice on a newer 110 I will sharpen it.

I am/was a little hesitant to do so but what the heck. I didn't want to screw it up.

Thanks Again,

Ken K.

I love it! Someone loved and carried and modded that 110, to have it redone would destroy all that guy's time he put into it. A well used, much loved folder should be honored as is! Of course, I'm kinda sentimental that way and it's not my knife.

The newer(2000 and up I bellieve) 110 will have close to a 30degree bevel and the 3 dot would have come with around 40degree if I'm not mistaken. But I guess if its that dull you can reprofile it to what ever you want.

You can always send it to Leroy R... He has everything to take care of old 110's and new ones...
Just give him a call... Tell him what you want done... Good Luck...

Thanks imafritz.

I meant to inquire about the bevel angle in my last post. I will sharpen it to it's original 40 degree bevel.
Thanks as well ItsTooEarly, I will keep that in mind.

For what it's worth, I had my brother's circa 1975 .110. (dull as a hammer by the time it reached me) sharpened professionally with a much more acute angle (dunno what degree, though) than factory and it's holding up amazingly well. The blade profile is just a tad slimmer after decades of use but it is an old knife. The "gold nugget" bolsters on your knife are just fantastic! You pull that out for any task and people are going to be impressed. Tell them it's 24 kt that you won in a poker game. Or a drag race. Better yet, a duel! Do the scales on the right side of the handle have the tell-tale "snap scar" left by the inside of the sheath?
