Long story short, when I wear scrubs, I carry my knives IWB with a deep carry clip. I usually carry a push button auto with a safety, but I wanted to get a manual knife, and I really like the ergonomics of the Buck Ranger.

I picked up a Buck Ranger TRX thinking the back lock would be strong enough to keep the blade closed, which it probably is, but I’m a chronic over-thinker and over-worrier, so I wanted it to be even MORE secure.

I couldn’t figure out where to get a stronger tension bar, and not needing the knife to be deployed quickly nor opened with one hand, I decided to modify the knife to lock closed!

Pics are below, but what I essentially did was took my dremel and very carefully cut a notch for the lock bar to catch when closed, requiring the “button” to be depressed when opening the knife. I also had to grind down the “choil” slightly to give the lock bar clearance to catch the new notch. As you can see in the pics, the only aesthetic difference is the lock bar is slightly raised when closed, but it’s barely noticeable.

It’s definitely more cumbersome to open, but it works perfectly for my purposes, and I have no worries about slicing my giblets!

Taking it apart also let me clean it out…a lot of shavings and gunk from the factory in there!

It looks like what you ended up doing was modified a stronger detent interface. I would imagine this would also work.

Not for me, there goes your warranty, but if you are happy with the results then you are successful

I’ve never in my life had to send a Buck back for warranty work, so I’m not worried in the slightest.

What is the little hole in the handle, is there a stop pin? I noticed that my 112 Sport had a positive stop and wouldn't move the rocker bar when I pushed on the blade in the closed position.

I’m not sure, but the blade doesn’t contact it at all, at least not in the open position. The pin is so small I doubt it would hold up to any pressure while using the knife anyway.

A pin in that location would be to keep the blade from over closing and contacting the spring or back spacer.
