I modified it again:

The story: I was out back picking oranges and thinking how I could make things easier. I had my izzy and 6 on me at the time... Both had screaming convex edges. The issue in picking oranges is that when you "pull" the orange from the branch it will sometimes rip the stem while still attached to the tree and leave a hole on the top of your orange.

I used to use pruning clippers to cut the stem flush with the orange.

I decided to use my knives today... The razor edges were not a very effective slicer of the stem and required much force to go thru. The 6 was too big for the task. My izzy with the previously re-worked recurve worked much better but was lacking bite.

Into the shop I went... And 30 min later I have a fully serrated recurve convexed izula.

Then I became hungry and snacked on an orange....

Not a bad mod for making your life easier

I myself still prefer Pruning shears for my oranges.

By the way, where do you live? I have picked my Orange trees cleaned and they're blossoming now

Thanks Testify, I'm in southern california, we're just now starting to harvest.

Pruning shears do seem to work a little better but I've always thought they were too bulky, I always end up stabbing the orange or missing the stem or whatnot.

I thing i'm gonna have to work on the serrations some more to get it more efficient.

Sorry for the OT, but that 6 looks really good with the coating stripped off. ;)

thanks for the kind words about the 6

How did you make the serrations?

I used a rat tail file and free handed the serrations.

Nice mod... I worked in the citrus industry for 4 years. Are you a grower?

Not a professional grower but I do have 16 orange trees on the property....

My izzy went back to the bench and I worked on the serrations some more, I then re patinaed and put back a screaming edge...

What do you all think?

I think I’d have just started carrying a serrated knife.

Very interesting though.

I dont have any. Well, I have the izzy now. I was looking at some last night.... The spyderco civilian looks wicked!

Personally tho, I hate serrated edges, I've had a few and they always snag on stuff... So I sold/ traded them. Yesterday however, I found a use for a serrated blade... One draw cut per orange.

Here's the question, I know this is a dead horse already but what do you cultists think about serrations. To be honest, I would buy a full serrated 6.

Always nice to see people modding stuff they already have to work for them. I commend you for that, but for your orange applications you may be better served with a pruning blade. Like a Victorinox pruning knife, or a Rancher. I think this would be more comfortable to use as well.

I was thinking the same thing. I have an old cheapo pruning knife that works great for that applications (and a few others). It probably didn't cost more than $1.50.

Something like this:

The serrated Izula does look pretty wild, though.

It looks cool but I don't have the nads to try it on one of my knives.

Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I'm gonna have to look into those pruning blades... Or, since I've already modded the izzy.... Make mine look like one of those.;)
