My Recon 1 was the very first tanto blade I've ever owned, however came to find out I'm not very fond of the blade shape.
For the last month or so its just been sitting in the bottom of my day pack not getting any use, but filling the role of "just in case I loose my primary".
Any who, after some tinkering with the belt sander, this is what I came up with.

It doesn't look that great, but now its a solid knife with the blade that is perfect for my application, not to mention it gets a whole lot more pocket time.

Wow. looks great!

I'd buy it.. good job!

And I am glad you got rid of that silly black teflon coating

Great job. I dislike most of the tanto shapes out there and this mod looks very useful.

Ha thats awesome!, looks like you just stumbled across the Rick Hinderer Spanto.

How even is that on either side?? I want one!

Thanks!
And Yes, the coating really sucks. It actually started loosing it while in my pack, so I just scrapped it all off.

Yup, this thing slices beautifully now!

Its surprisingly very even!
After I removed the L, I started grinding it at 3 passes per side and a dip in ice water till I got a bur, then I started to hit the whole edge until evenly razor sharp. The only thing that looks kinda crappy is where the angles change, but I can live with it.

Glad all you guys approve!

Love it! I'd take that over any of the versions of the Recon CS is currently offering.

very decent conversion. i've never owned a single tanto blade. they are a question looking for an answer.--dennis

I actually like that transition point! It looks like it will still snap cut stuff. :thumbup:Nice job sir.

I actually think it looks really good where the angle is going to where the blade would change direction. Good job and you gave it a great belly!

The western tanto point does, in fact, serve a purpose.

I have seen a demo of snap cuts on different material using different blade shapes. A very light flick on a tanto point will give you amazing penetration through different material, that a curved blade won't penetrate, even with an edge sharpened the same and with much more force.

Heavy denim, or leather jackets etc will be deeply penetrated with a flick/snap cut. They are quicker to execute and recover from than a point thrust. Also makes for a very strong point for stabbing, prying etc.

That said, I don't really like the look of them as much as I used to. I have an old recon1 with zytel handles that I have done a bit of rounding over the years, just form sharpening. I used to sharpen the two planes to kip that secondary point clean and sharp.
