Modify Balisong to be legal in California?

Just take up some form of martial arts instead. The pay off will be much better, and you will be much more capable of defending yourself than you would be with a simple blade in your pocket.

I have to ask, why would you have all four of them on you at once?

I am in California and personally I don't really understand why balisongs and automatics (over 2") are illegal. I don't think they present a threat any more than a one hand opener with a thumbstud or Spyderhole.

If you are set on carrying a knife for defense you can either say screw the law and carry your bali or carry a California legal knife with a thumb opener (which you can likely deploy faster than a bali). I believe carrying a balisong in California is a felony. I wouldn't try to modify a balisong to be legal because chances are it will still be illegal and it will probably fall apart on you in a defense scenario.

Well it seems like you're trained well enought to not need four bali's to defend yourself.

You might want to take a look at NewGraham.com's "Bottlefly" too.

Hmm, if thread goes on, just think, it may get an award for most silly ideas expressed in a single thread!

The reason I carry 4, since it seems that has made some of you cuirious, Ill give you a scenario, Lets say your in a bank just went there to cash your pay check while you stand in line 4 armed bank robbers come in start screaming orders out , Then suddenly one of the robbers shots a 18 year old girl just because shes doing her job, well now you have to make a decision do you do nothing and hope they dont kill anyone else or do you do your best to stop it? well thats a hard decision to make because if you fail you might get more killed, now I would have to stop it. 1st I would take out the 2 robbers farthest from me by throwing 2 balisong , now im left with 2 more to take out the robbers closest to me. Im not saying I could do this because it hasnt happend but I atleast have a chance.
What movie is this from? Jet Li? Jackie Chan? Time for a reality check.

Chances are you'd end up dead in a scenario like that unless there were other armed people who would resist. Given much society's view on carrying firearms and people expecting others to save them, I'd say you'd be dead. I greatly doubt you'd ever be able to effectively throw a balisong as a weapon.

Get yourself a concealed carry license. Failing that, get some pepper spray. Carry a knife if you wish, but don't expect to take out half a dozen heavily armed criminals or whatever.

I see this is a very mature forum , Ok yes its from a movie and im a idiot making up stories, so back to the original question. would changing the blade for a saw blade make it legal? Im not saying I would do this in a work shop at home I would have it made by a knife company .

more than likely your rite . it was just used to explaine 4 knifes

This thread is making me laugh.

In regards to the topic question. I honestly doubt that modifying it to be a saw blade would help any. I have a lot of experience with cops, and if they find a saw bali on you, they will treat it like a deadly, illegal weapon. Honestly, it doesn't really matter what you are carrying, if you are caught in a situation where cops feel the need to search you fo weapons, they will treat even the most inoffensive folder like a serious weapon. I've seen a kid get in trouble for having a phillips screwdriver in his pocket. They confiscated it as a weapon and used it against him later in court because of where he was and what he was doing.

Really, your best bet is to move somewhere where bali throwing ninja superheros are more accepted by the law.

Yes, I don't think a saw blade would help. My guess is you would definitely be arrested if caught and the court would most likely consider it a serrated balisong - even if the serrations are most suited for sawing wood.

There probably isn't any case law to prove it, but I strongly suspect this is the case.

Ok if the saw blade wouldnt work anyone know of something that would? or atleast enough to give you a good chance at beating it in court?

You might want to look into Spyderco's Spyderfly. Since the latch only locks the knife shut and not open, it may be legal in California. Actually, upon closer inspection of CA's knife laws, probably not. Ask a Lawyer or Bernard Levine (he'll tell you the legality for $10), it'd be cheaper than dumping your knives or paying a fine.

Aw man, I really didn't wanna chime in and post in this useless thread, but I just can't resist...

Give a Magic Marker to a 12-year old. Put on a large, old white t-shirt. Tell the kid to "attack" you with the Magic Marker. Try to evade his stabs and slashes and try to disarm him. Then count the number of dots and lines on your shirt and imagine what an adult could do. Yeah, you would have acted differently if it was a real self-defense encounter, but I think you get the message.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't practice your weapon skills, but the "a weapon will inevitably be absolutely useless at best if you don't have any training"-mindset is just so ridiculous.

I carry 4 because thats my style I do know and have a black belt in Ti Chi I had to obtian this befor I could be trianed in balisong. I understand your point but its not me . [...]

And we all know that a black belt in Tai Chi is like the ability to pull off guaranteed one shot stops if you need to defend yourself...

I have to disagree with you on the flip knife a trainded person with balisongs is much more dangerous then a flip knife , most think the balisong is just 3 moves its not!

It's 376478398 moves, every single one optimized to deal with a specific situation! The more complex it gets the better!

What a joke.

And do you really believe that your balisong is more "dangerous" than a "flip knife"? If so, why? Because you can also use it as a kubotan while it's closed? You can do that with any normal-sized regular folder.

someone trianed rite with the balisong could take out 5 armed men in seconds.

...and under certain circumstances, an old woman could take out a dozen career criminals with a toothbrush!

So you pretty much advise him to carry as few weapons as possible (a black belt needs no stinking options  )?

If he can carry four knives comfortably, why would you bother? Imagine you're forced to grapple on the ground. Could you access your neck knife while you're lying on your belly? Could you draw a fixed blade from its sheath set up for small-of-the-back carry when you're lying on your back? Could you draw a folder from your pocket when an attacker is sitting on your hips pummeling your face with a club?

Does it get more mall ninja-esque than that?
