Hiya Folks,

I'd like to thank you all for being so helpful since I joined the forum. I've always had a passionate interest in knives, their designs,
and their uses in real life situations. Its great to finally find a group that shares similar qualities, I don't feel like such a freak now. lol
Just kidding. Anyway, I'm on the verge of purchasing a CS Recon Scout and I was hoping to find someone that has modified one.
I want to modify the knife's guard by removing it's top piece entirely. Basically changing it into what resembles a CS SRK with the half-guard design.
The reason I don't just purchase the CS SRK outright is simple: I prefer the 5/16" blade thickness.
Has anyone done a similar mod and are there any special instructions I should follow?
I've made similar mods to other knives with a disk grinder, but I'm hungry for input before attempting this mod.

Again, thanks in advance,

Keep the blade cool. If the steel changes color, its getting too hot. Keep a bucket of water nearby or some kind of squirt bottle. Other than that, don't forget to post pics.

I broke the guard and messed up the handle using it for a throwing knife. Needless to say, I didn't always stick it.

So I cut off the handle rubber and took it apart. I sanded off the black coating. I used a power sander and made sure it never got warm. I had a buddy cut me a piece of stainless which I drilled and hand filed out for a double guard. Then I used a piece of hickory limb for a new handle. I drilled it out and used a rat-tail rasp to shape the hole for the tang. I measured and measured and double checked before I drilled the lanyard hole. Then I used a steel roll pin that I placed in the freezer for awhile. I forced the roll pin through the thong hole after I made sure everything would fit tight. I hammered a couple of spent pistol hulls over the roll pin and drilled out the lanyard hole through the roll pin. I also used some glue on the tang. The hickory grain on end of the handle after I shaped it on a 1 inch belt sander started to collapse, so I hammered another pistol hull in the end. I had only air dried it. It has been years ago, but I think I just used wax on the handle. I like it better now and have chopped several limbs with it. Once I chopped down a six inch willow tree. Forcing a frozen roll pin just the right size throught the handle and tang allowed for a tight fit that has never loosened.

After spending time making a new handle and guard, I quit throwing it.
