Modifying a BK9 for FIRE!

Alright. So I've seen this done at least a couple of times here, though I thought I'd give it a go. I simply took a file to the back of the blade and flattened out the spine so I could scrape my firesteel.com firesteel which has been a pain since I bought it, though it throws huge globes of fire.

Anybody else do this recently or have any other blade mods that may be useful?

Here are some pics.

Wanted to take a in-use shot, but not an easy thing to do for this type of thing. Seems to work well though, nice to have something larger to hold onto while scraping the firesteel.

Nice job. I'm planning on doing the same thing to my BK-2.

Thank you. I think the bk2 would benefit the most from it since there is no thumb-ramp on it and you'd be able to strike close to the handle. Should be a handy thing to have, striking with the blade itself always makes me cringe. Though it does work incredibly well.

my bhk bushcrafter's spine is squared off and works amazing as a scraper. it produces similar sparks to mike's fletcher knife when we were out. with that said, i won't use it again for that unless i really have to. with a $150 knife, i'll sissy out and use a lighter and fatwood first  or let you guys do all the work :D

by the way, don't use your mora's edge for it either, like i did at our last outing. it took me several hours to remove the rolls (severe enough that it might as well be chips) :grumpy:

edit: we're always rushing our fire starting when we're in a group. i know i spend a gazillion times more in preparing tinder when i'm by myself and most times, 1-3 sparks is all it takes for me to get the camp fire started. maybe next time, each one should have their own tinder bundle and be given 3 strikes to start it...after that each strike will cost $1 and whoever can get the camp fire started the fastest gets the cash pile. that'll teach us to be just as patient with tinder when we're in a group outing...who knows it might prevent a few more holes in someone's pants' leg too :D

Sucks about the rolls. Not the biggest worry on the bk9 or in general since I have a few other options as it is.

We do need to spend more time preparing for the fire lol. TONS more small tinder at the very least. Once we had that big pile of curls and shavings, it got going easily. Will be much easier when it is warmer/dryer out too.

Nice pic's and discreption. I like these types of theads, it really helps those of us who would like to learn more about mod's and improvements...

All my knives get a squared spine. Not only does it work well for a scaper tha way, when making natty tinder, but it does throw a spark pretty well.

Looking good Ive done this to all my beckers including eskabar. I flatten mine from handle to tip to use with firesteel and because it makes a good wood scraper to smooth out cuts and scrape tinder.

Moose beat me to it I ate breakfast and didnt refresh page lol

moosez45, scraping wood to make tinder is definitely a good idea too. Luckily that isn't too tough on the blade, but having the dedicated scraper on the spine is a plus.

You need more stuff on that workbench.;)

You should see the left side of it! I have a small 2x2' section for metal/wood work and my sister has the other 5' for glass work.

Glad you liked it. I really enjoy threads like these too, more interesting than simply seeing the final product.

At least this wasn't an auction thread, didn't lose that knife you were thinking about buying. I hate when I do that!
