Hello guys,

I am new to the trade. My wife bought me a jet 2x42" belt sander with the 8" disc sander on the side for Christmas from Home Depot. Its a nice little machine. It works well for flat stuff, but curves... its not all that easy. I would really love to have a small contact wheel attachment. Or any other attachment for that matter.

My question is, has anyone modified one to do something like that? Before I start designing a way to do it myself, I thought it would be nice to see if anyone had done this before.

Thanks!

I’d cut off part of the top cover so you gain access to the top wheel. It looks like it can be done without too much trouble.

Here is something a friend said, could I use the disc side to make it use sanding wheels, like from a Dremel? That is an interesting idea too.

That top wheel, I used it on the longer sloping areas on the handle, but the finger groove spot... I'd like a small wheel there.

You can only modify it so much. Money spent modifying it is not going to make it a better machine. It may be better to keep it as-is as a grinder for handles, and build or buy a 2X72 that takes changeable tool arms and wheels. A basic unit can be had for less than $1000.

For small wheel work you can purchase mandrel mounted Sanding Drums that can be chucked up in a drill press or hand held drill. The other option is oscillating spindle sander with various size spindles.
