Modifying a SAK

I've looked over the articles at sosakonline, and I've given up on a certain other forum that I've been trying to become a member of for over a month now just to ask to join the SOSAK forum. So I turn to ya'll with my question:

I've got a Victorinox Climber with a pair of badly damages scissors. I've also got a Wenger that I think is only usable for the scissors. I'm thinking about disassembling them both and putting the Wenger scissors in the Vic.

My questions are:
-Has anyone tried this and if so, it is feasible?
-What do I need to know and have on hand for tools and parts?

This is by far the most ambitious knife project I've ever undertaken, and I am in the unknown country. But if it works, I might try to add a layer to a Vic OHT for a pair of scissors stolen from a sacrificial Wenger. :)

Swapping parts between the different brands won't work. I think the only part you can swap from the different brands is the can opener tool. I suggest having a drill press to drill out the pins and a hammer and flat punch to peen the pins back. As far as re- assembling goes, a third arm and or trained monkey would make things go a little easier!

I forgot to ask, what kind of problems did you have trying to join SOSAK? Hopefully I can help you out with that.

It isn't joining SOSAK, as in the web page that has the articles, but the SOSAK forum that is run through knifeforums. I've tried several times to sign up with KF and it never processes, and I've reached the point of just saying heck with them. KF makes me :grumpy:

As for not being able to swap... that sucks. Is it becuase the thicknesses of the layers? Different sized pins or radically different pin configuration? Differences in the lock? The tools didn't suprise me, but I wanted to be sure there wasn't anything special I might need.

I guess that also means that my idea of looking for a thumb hole-based one handed tanto blade that can be put into an OH Vic while adding the blade from a regular SAK in parallel is out to, huh.

I said I was new to this kind of thing- I didn't say I wasn't ambitious.

You don't need KF anyway, I don't like the way they are set up, it takes too long to get around, and all the ads gives me a headache. Thank you BF for staying ad-free and user-friendly!:) edcforums is pretty cool for other things than knives, and I do alot trading there, they have some good deals and knowledgeable people. I still spend 90% of my online time here though.

Please allow me to respectfully disagree. I have found the SOSAK forum on KnifeForums to be a wonderful community for SAK collectors. If anyone has difficulty joining SOSAK and would like me to try to help, I am highly willing to convey your wishes to the moderator for that forum. For those who don't really care about joining SOSAK and don't like KnifeForums, I respect your opinion and I share your enjoyment of this forum here on BladeForums. I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in both venues.

Tim, if someone had made that offer back in JANUARY, when I made my first attempt to become a member of BF I'd have been interested. They haven't gotten back to me yet. :(

Nor for the other times I've tried to sign up since then. :grumpy:

The SOSAK forum is probably the only one I'd be interested, but becuase the management at BF apparently doesn't like my user name or my email address or something (kinda hard to tell when they NEVER get back to you), I'm afraid I'll never know why they don't think I'm good enough. But they still haven't gotten back to me in over five months of waiting.

Five months is as long as I wait.

Don't get me wrong, SOSAK is great, and I spend a little time there almost everyday, but KF is just a little harder to use than BF and I like the things that are talked about here more. I respect many people on KF, but I wish that they would jump over here, so for all the best opinions one would only have to look here. It is kind of like Victorinox Vs. Wenger, they are both great companies, but I just prefer Vics and find myself bying only them just as I find myself spending way more time on BF. Sorry if I offended anyone on KF.

<Chuckle> I imagine some of 'em would say the same, wishing that BF users would all move to KF. ;)

Since I don't see either happening, I'll just have to visit both. Could be worse: there could be NO such venues. Two is better than none.
