How would one go about modifying the blade shape on a knife? Eg. changing a blade from a drop point (or something else) into a tanto (or something else) which may not sound correct but you get the idea. Anyone? Thanks

Bench vice, angle grinder, steel file. After that I like to use a belt sander and turn it upside down to smooth everything enough to polish.

All of the above are correct, but, I would add one thing.....Tom Krein. Why risk mangling a perfectly good knife when Tom will do an awesome job on it for $35 plus shipping (assuming the knife is worth the $35 plus shipping, of course ;)) .

Regrinding a blade, helps to have tools you know how to use well.

Take your time, there's no rush, there's also no "undo" button.

This can be done with power or hand tools.

Up to you how it gets done, even shipping it of to Tom Krein or someone else.

I use a 1"X42" Rockwell belt grinder with a contact wheel on the drive spindle. Draw a line on the knife with a marker and grind to the line. Wear eye protection and a respirator if you don't have dust collection equipment. I work outside or in the mouth of the garage. Use fresh coarse belts to establish the basic shape. Use finer belts on the contact wheel to smooth edges and blend surfaces. Use copious quantities of water to keep the blade cool to the touch. Get some old kitchen knives at the flea market to practice on. You can modify handles too.

I used a regular belt sander to do this; less than ideal but it worked.

Thread here.
