G'Day from Australia. First post.

Just got a Leatherman Surge and bit kit, and very happy with it so far.

I want to modify the awl into a small knife, basically just to use for opening boxes and stuff like that. How easy is the tool to pull apart and reassemble? Are there any tricks to it? And any recommendations on changing the profile of the steel?

TIA, Will

Hi. Welcome to the forums, like you I'm also enjoying the use of the LM-Surge. But why would you want to modify the Awl into a short knife? Surely the other two knives can suffice for any task at hand?
Besides, the Awl is perfect for those jobs where you need a good hole-puncher, I use mine almost on a daily basis to create access points in wood, tarps and other materials.

Though you might want to check out this thread:

I think these experts can be of great help to your project.
Good Luck!

Why not just sharpen it? No disassembly required.

Seriously, it'll give you a pretty obtuse edge, but you might be surprised how sharp it can get. I sharpen the awls on all my user multitools, as well as the can openers, and either works just fine for slicing open taped-up boxes and the like.

Or, if you're concerned about over-penetration when slicing through cardboard rather than tape, you could work on your technique: use just the end of the serrated blade, with your index finger along the spine right up to the tip, so that the tip of your finger slides along the surface of the cardboard as you cut, keeping the tip from going any deeper than you want. It's harder to describe than it is to do!

Thanks for the replies. I basically just want a small knife to use on thin items, so I don't blunt the main blades. I'll probably just do as suggested, and sharpen the awl for this purpose.
