I'd like to mod the can openers on my Farmer and other SAKs. They don't seem to grip and function as well as they could. Anyone have how-to's, tips, or pics they'd like to share?

Thanks in advance!

well, the can opener on victorinox actually funtion very well and the best can opener of the multitools... not to mention the very handy screwdriver tip... its one of my favorit tool in victorinox... its been serve me very2 well...

my advice is leave it alone... and practice to use it the way it was designed...

goodluck buddy...

Thanks for your input Iyonk:thumbup:. The can opener on my Farmer (my most used Vic) does the job better than nothing. I have practiced using it; it is actually my experience with it that makes me want to mod it. I agree that the small screwdriver / phillips tip is very handy, but the can opener could still use improvement.

I think I've narrowed down the problem. The lip claw is too wide and blunt to grip effectively. I realized earlier today that I'm not the first to notice it, dug up this post from a SAK thread in W&SS:

[...]and I could have tweaked the can opener to make it work. Some may work fine, right out of the box, but the ones I have had required some attention.

For anyone who wants their can opener to work, the problem with mine was that the "claw" that hooks under the can's rim, was too rounded to get a bite and the part that was supposed to pierce the can had a large flat spot on it. Bending the tip of the claw toward the scale, and then making it flush again with stones would give you a sharper tip to bite into the can's rim. Since the design makes you work forward, that claw hangs up a little and is not as convenient as dragging the claw on a P38 as you reposition for the next cut. Sharpening the piercing part would be easy enough but keep the angle high and don't polish it like a knife edge. Some toothiness on that part makes it work better. The can opener on my blue Farmer is better but could use the claw tweak. The one on the silver one was pretty bad.

Going to give Jeff H's tweak a try .

That actually really make sense... Since i dont open cans very often, the stock do me just fine..but those improvement actually could come handy.thx buddy.
