Moen Grinding Jig question...

This thread is for the ones that own/use this particular jig.

I bought one of them a few months ago. Overall, I am satisfied with it, but I have one issue with it. Mind you, it may be me...not the tool...lol!

As you know, the blade holder has carbide inserts. Compared to a file guide, in which the carbide strips are flat and straight, the inserts are kinda thin, and has somewhat of a sharp edge. The problem I have at times is I will get it too close to the belt, and will touch it. When this happens, the edge of the belt will rip a little. especially the thicker belts (ie. 36 grit).

I suppose I am asking any tips to help me with this. Thanx in advance.

Just be more careful is the only advise I can give. I've probably ground 300 blades with mine.

Brave man working the plunge with a 36 grit belt. I would stay in front of the plunge away from the carbide guides and work back to the plunge line with 100 grit belt.

I use mine on every knife, it's mostly operator error😁
You have to be very careful with low grit belts.
I have to really pay attention with even 80 grit belts to not cut the edges.
You also may be starting with too much angle on the jig.

I'm really curious of how you folks that use the jig when changing from side to side get repeatable results. Enquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

That jig only guarantees that the plunge line on both sides will be in the same place and have the same angle , the rest is up to the user :)

Thanx.
It is obviously human error...LOL
I was definitely going too close to the edge.
Thanx for all your responses...
If belt run in line with glass behind belt you *can t* go too close to edge of tungsten strip .If you *angle* little jig towards belt then edge of carbide strip can catch belt . If I explain well what I mean

Here's a 36 grit rough grind, hollow, with the moen jig. You can see a few miniscule scratches right where it transitions to the flat, and I ended it slightly forward of where it needs to be (which I'll finish up with a 120 grit belt) PXL_20231223_214523035.jpg

I need to spend some funds before the end of the month and considered this when this thread posted—but then I saw the current pricing …, .
For those that use it regularly, would you pay the current price vs the price from not so long ago?

I'm pretty sure that's been the price for a while now (few years).... And yes I would 100%...saves me so much time in the long run.

Josh, I need to learn how to make those consistent sweeping plunges on my hollow grinds. Yours are the epitome of precision.

Thanks so much for the kind words man 🙏 I just feather it in so to speak... Light but firm touch. Sometimes I rotate the blade while I'm doing it (when freehanding, for any even more sweeping plunge)
