I had seen this knife at the local pawn shop months ago but since I didn't know which Moki it was I didn't get it. The knife slipped out of view in their case and I forgot about it. Then I saw it again this past Thursday and the clerk said 20 bucks, so I told him I would be back with the money. That night I opened the book that I am reading called "The Working Folding Knife" to the chapter on lockbacks that I was reading. Well, BAM, there is the knife with the name in the caption! So I promised to buy a knife without knowing the name and I found out the name before I came to own it! How cool is that?

For a 19 year old knife, this thing is in super shape. There is NO vertical play and only a little horizontal. Also, I can't feel where the blade stops and the lockbar begins. Not even with my finger nail. That is how tight the tolerances are.

Last comment. I love the mirror polish on the blade. It is almost to pretty to use. I tried my best to capture the mirror polish but the picture came out blurry. There is only one bad scratch on the whole blade.

Moki makes a lot of very high-quality blades. I have several of their Spyderco collaborations/imports from the 1990s. Great stuff - and a great find for $20!

A spyderco without an opening hole, I didn't think such a knife existed. Even their fixed blades has one.

What super impressed me it that this Moki has less blade play than my brand new Benchmade 15050. Not that this is a knock on the Benchmade, I can adjust the play out on the Benchmade but the Moki is PINNED! I believe the edge would be (or is) factory were it not for the fact that the blade has contacted the stainless backspacer in one place. Consequently, it is dull in that one place.

It is not a Spyderco per say. Spyderco imported it under Moki's own name but it was in the Spyderco Catalog. See this catalog for more info. http://www.spydercosource.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/spyderco1994.pdf

Oh, by the way, the Jess Horn in that same catalog lacks the opening hole.

A really cool (and sometimes lost) piece of Spyderco history.

Another interesting line of knives that came out of this same period is the Solo line. Designed by Sal, and built in Japan with thumb studs instead of Spydie holes. Sal was thinking about starting an affiliated brand with the "Solo" name - but after a handful of knives, the idea fell by the wayside. Sal says that even though they are branded as Solo knives, they are Spydercos through-and-through. A quick search on the forum will turn up several interesting threads on these knives...

Here's a shot of my small collection:

Were you the one who posted a Solo in the gentleman knife thread?

I saw those knives in the catalog with my Moki. Very cool looking.

Memories, memories... All that was missing was the Spyderco Ramco laguiole:

... and when I think I was that close to get a Solo buttonlock... :(

I picked up a book called "The Working Folding Knife" and it had a bunch of the same knives as in this thread. It contained the laguiole, Silver Feather and Solo in it. This thread would not have been possible without that book.

AWESOME KNIVES!! How long is the blade on the laguiole, if you don't mind me asking.

:) Yeah, that was me. I've been in love with the Solo 01 since it came out.

There is a really cool version out there with a combo white/black micarta scale in a "yin yang" pattern. Not many of them were made - Sal has said that they proved too difficult and costly to manufacture, even though they are great looking. Been looking for one of these for years and years. Haven't found one yet...

Thanks for the link to spydercosource. Gave me more info on two I have. The Spyderco Standard and Moki's Aiora
