I have heard a few people mention they would never buy a damascus knife with mokume bolsters. Is this true for you? If so why? Would it change your mind to have Gold/silver mokume instead.
Thank you in advance for your responses,
Del

This is just my own personal single opinion, but the only thing I like less than damascus is mokume regardless of the makeup. It would be a two way deal killer for me.

a big YES!
I've got a damascus pen with mokume accents and it looks fantastic (even though it's not a knife).

Kind regards,

Jos

I think that I would personally like gold and silver mokume as a bolster material. I like mokume, but don't like the way it tarnishes.I think it could look good with a pattern welded blade. It would all depend on the patterns displayed in the mokume and the steel.

That would be a great big YES for me!!

I would like non-matching, but complimentary patterns myself.

Literally translated Mokume means:

Something that should never be used on a knife :D

Mokume was a fad, which well has faded.

If you want a Damascus folder to become your permanent EDC or "Graveyard Knife". Use a Mokume bolster and Abalone scales!

Before everyone jumps on me. The reason I say something like this in a public forum is, so you will not call, email or stop by my table at a show and try to sell or trade me anything with Mokume on it.

A "pre-emptive strike" if you will.

I'd say yes for me also, but the pattern on the mokume would have to flow well with the pattern on the damascus! Matching or complimentary patterns would do!

Kieth, and others
Would you prefer matching patterns, complimentary or non-matching patterns?
Thanks,
Del

I think it totally depends on the design of the knife. I think all of the above could work. I tend to prefer contrasting, but complimentary patterns for the most part.

I love mokume, and I'd love some on a knife. However, it would have to be the right mokume. Gold and silver would be nice (especially if using argentium). Gold and shakudo would be even better. With this said, gold is hugely expensive these days.

Some of the nicest mukume work I have seen actually included (argh!) brass.

I also love mokume of copper & others when the copper is patinated with traditional Japanese rokusho.

With this said, I suspect that mokume and damascus might be a bit much...

A big YES to mokume. I have many knives with mokume fittings. I think that it adds something to a knife. Depending on the materials it sometimes looks better as it tarnishes.

Les was talking about the popularity of mokume a few years back and that it's popularity has slipped some.
Were a lot of guys making it/using it?
I guess what I'm asking is who most popularized it?
Thanks.

Doug

Mokume was popular on folders back in the 90s' and I used some. But it's been out of vogue for a long time now. I like the stuff but no one has asked me for it in over 8 years.

Hugh Bartrug Retired MS used alot of mokume.

I like mokume gane - a lot. However, it would depend on the damascus pattern. Mokume on some damascus might be overpowering. I think it looks great on the knives in the photos posted in this thread!

I think it all depends on the knife. There must be a market for it as William Henry seems to put out a lot of knives with it.
