do you have to use sheets and a press for mokume? for example, could you put a bunch of brass copper and nickel balls in a stainless steel can and put it in the forge?

I dont see why you couldn't. Try it!
 
Not really... If you want to melt them together and make a new alloy which is homogeneous, yes.
To have the different metals semi-distinct from one another, you have to almost reach the melting point, then press them together to remove the spaces, and have a solid piece with some sort of grain design...
 
sheets are the preferred material to use ,and you don't need a press. a few people are experimenting with "can" mokume with powered non ferrous metals. pictures of a few of these haven't shown the results that can be had with fused sheets so far.
 
allright, thank you i think i'm going to try it and what i was thinking would happen is the brass would melt and fill in the spaces leaving the copper and nickel balls inside of it but i'll be sure to post what happens with (crappy) pics when i do!
