Molding Leather

Here's a quick question.

I was making a molded leather sheath for my latest knife creation. I wet the leather with tap water, and molded it around the knife until it assumed the correct shape, then let it dry.

Now the leather is stained. It's still usable, but I'll have to dye it. (I prefer to keep the sheaths natural color.)

Is there any way to keep the leather from staining during the molding process?

Use either pure wood alcohol or acetone and it should be very slightly damp. I use a cotton ball on a hemostat. I use analine dye mixed with the alcohol or acetone so I'm doing both steps at once.
