V A is sending me to a dermatoligist to remove numerous moles that have been appearing over a short period. the procedure is called 'shaving'. anyone had this procedure ?

I remember from my variocele & hernia in an army hospital we used to stop erections to prevent stitch tearing. It was called ethyl chloride & it removed flesh feeling, rather numbing it. Great anesthetic. Do the numb the mole area in that way ?

Please give me any first-hand info. Thank you U

I had a couple done and my dad had a lot of them done. Our doctor froze them and cut them with what appeared to be a sharpened soldering gun. No pain at all and a bandaid to cover it. A day or two later they were healed.

i have had a couple of moles removed. i didn't have the shaving procejure, they were excised, and even then they just numbed with one needle, cut it out, one stitch on the little one. the stitches came out in 7 days and i don't even remember being very sore either. just didn't want to stand tall for the first 2 days as they were on my side of my stomach.

Eliptical excision is the preferred method performed by plastic surgeons. Shaving is usually what a derm would do in their office and it can leave a scar that is much worse. Not a problem if it is in an inconspicuous area but bad if it is on your face, for example. My sister had a mole shaved because it was right where her bra strap would rub. Small mole and about a dime sized scar. She is happy enough. They'll send the tissue to the lab for testing. Shouldn't be a big deal but, like I said, if they are on your face push for excision by a plastic surgeon.

I had a malignant melanoma removed from my chest. Had it for 2 years then it started itching. Went to a Dermo then referred to a Oncologist. 35 stitches later no problems. Im not what ya call a sun bunny, doc said they are seeing alot of these due to the increased loss of ozone protection. Really bad in Australia.

my second mole was a malignant melanoma as well. they excised an additional elliptical piece after testing, the doctor did a method of stitching where he stitched from one end, then did a s pattern through the length of the excision (sub-linnear or something like that, i'm sure someone on here will know) and knotted the other end, rather then the other method of multiple stitches at a right angle to the cut. the excision was just over 2'', and the visible scar was less then that.

I had a large mole cut out of my left upper arm. It turned out to be malignant. There was much ringing of hands and gnashing of teeth between the dermatologist and the surgeon about how much surrounding tissue to remove.
So if yours is similar make sure they get that right......

The procedure itself was vey easy, a few local anasthetic injections followed by a Busse NMFBM.......just kidding:foot:...........All over in 10 mins and it was tender for a few weeks and then all done.

Our family has a bad cancer history and I am very fair............. needless to say the African sun is harsh.

I wish you well with the procedure and continued good health:)

i have had the "shaving" method, and on the face as well. just like it sounds: 1 shot, shave the growth w/ a regular disposable razor, then, out comes the bic lighter, the cauterizing tool is heated, hiss, band-aid. dr. said there would be a scar, but didn't ask for my input. scar is about 4 times the size of the growth. biopsy confirmed:malignant. had these removed for 20 years. mostly cryo., once w/ a little "cutting". the shaving is very quick, painless, and leaves a scar. that's about it...................b
