I got mine!

This is funny stuff too because I was trying to decide between OD and Khaki and went back and forth several times, and ultimately flipped a coin to decided. I opened the packing slip and confirmed Khaki, but the items sure look OD to me...and I am very happy with how they look.

These items really do enhance the functionality of the knife. I will admit I bought them because I thought they looked cool, but now that I used them, I appreciate how they work even more than how they look.

The supplied tin is ever so slightly deeper than Altoids tin I had been using...it is nice to have a bit more room to cram stuff.

I hope to get some time this weekend to take some photos and video of the knife and associated hardware in use.

Unit,

Cool beans man. Let us know about it as you work with it. I look forward to the pics to see it in action. BTW, I'm curious about the ASK tins. I've been leery about them because I'm afraid of the goods making a lot of noise rattling in the tin.

God bless,
Adam

Well, as a guy that is about as quiet as a bull charging through the woods, I must admit that I am not concerned much with noise...But mine does not rattle due to the length of para cord I stuffed into it for this very reason. I take up the additional volume with para, because, who can't appreciate a little extra cord? but also because I do not want anything to get damaged or worn from stuff gyrating about (nothing worse than my foil getting shredded by a rambunctious striker bar).

I will admit that I am new here...so my thoughts on the topic and preferences can and likely will evolve:D

Thanks,
Ken

the Molle back & pouch is great ,congrats !
as to rattle in your tin , stuff it with tinder tabs to fill the void or funky open spots and that will kill off any rattle.

you can also toss in an extra ranger band as a "rattle cushion".

I used unwound jute twine in my altoids tins to fill the gaps in my fire kits. Used to carry them hunting so had to keep them quite. Put all the goodies in, then jammed the the jute in wherever it would fit.

Hoping to have an ESEE myself once the holidays are over! Making plans for the Molle back and pouch myself! Cant wait!!

Congrats on your new molle back and pouch, they really are a great piece of gear! I do the same thing Tony does, stuff extra tinder tabs inside the empty spaces to fill up all the space inside. Also, to keep your tin really water resistant, tightly wrap the entire circumference of it with duct tape. That way if your tin goes into the "drink" your items will still be nice and dry inside! :)

Thanks guys. As promised, here is a photo.

I started another thread a couple days ago regarding altering the edge a bit. I decided to play around a bit today to "test" it out by chopping and hacking on some stuff. I must report that the blade fared VERY well...in fact better than I expected.

that's a sick looking edge! nice sharpening job  someday i'll have the patience to get my edges that nice. right now as soon as i hit the shaving sharp mark i stop and go right back to surfing bladeforums :o

I like that dark khaki!
the mirror edge and 2 halves of a golf ball is pretty impressive, too.

Thanks guys. I had a lot of fun today. Chopping balls with a 5 inch blade is a lot more difficult (and fun) than I would have guessed.

I am going off topic here, but I wanted to share these for anyone interested...what can I say, I am a proud owner and we are now "one" (I got a small cut last night batoning wood for a fire).

This phone of mine takes some surprisingly decent photos IMO!

Ken,

I am not sure if you're aware of this but wood is not round and is made of neither plastic nor rubber. Nice pics though. How are you cutting those things? Do you just set them on a safe surface and swing?

God bless,
Adam

Adam, Did you know that there is NOT any wood inside of this golf ball OR this tennis ball?! I was not certain, so I chopped them to see for sure ;)

I like to follow Blade Sports. Those guys chop some crazy targets, and it is fun to watch. One target series they use is a pair of rolling balls (typically a tennis ball followed by a golf ball). They make it look easy (and perhaps it is easier with a real chopper that is designed and built for the task...but I have a 5, and it seems to do everything fairly well, so I tried to chop balls). Let me tell you it is a lot harder than I thought it would be!

I also surmised that chopping balls would be torture for my edge. A hack like me does not simply lay down a clean cleave resulting in two perfect halves of a ball...no no no, what you see here is the result of about 6 glancing blows sending the golf ball flying and the edge then glances and hits the lumber. I managed to cleave the ball 3 times (2 were thin wafers a few mm thick, and one near the center). The tennis ball was the result of 2 attempts the first hit the target, but my wimpy limp-wristed chop only opened up a small cut in the shell. Make no mistake, these cuts require a HEAVY swing! The first hack at the tennis ball was my first chop ever at a ball and was way under powered. I corrected the problem for all subsequent chops and let 'er rip.

Is there any value in this? Probably not...other than it was very fun to do (and I got some video of it). Perhaps it serves as some sort of torture test for the edge...but I think actual use in the woods is going to be a lot more meaningful in the long run.

I did not take any photos or video of the wood batoning and fire building...you guys have seen that stuff at the end of you own arms. I just thought I would mention it since I got stupid and started batoning my pencil sticks with my palm as a baton and rounded the tip of the blade with my palm. Not too bad, but it proved itself to be quite sharp!

Oh and for the record I lay them on a board and try and cut them while stationary. Chopping a rolling ball has got to be WAY more difficult.

Here is a video of the real guys making it look easy with moving targets (and specialized choppers).
