New Knife - Jiri Model
My shop manager just sent me a new knife for your collections, called Jiri Model. He didn't have a specific historical story about this knife, but local
people believe that these knives were made by Jirian Kamis in the 19th century.
Jiri is a village in the Dolkha District of eastern Nepal, at an altitude of 1,905
meters, or 6,250 feet. The small village sits at the eastern end of the
highway from Kathmandu. Bus service is available from Kathmandu to Jiri, but
the 184 km trip takes 6 to 8 hours on the narrow, winding roads with several checkpoints.
Jiri has become the trail head for many treks into the popular Mount Everest
region which is a strong attraction for tourists and mountain climbers all over the world..
Some believe that this Jiri model knife was originally remodeled by local Kamis
from a European, possibly Swiss, knife over 200 years ago. The village of Jiri
is said to have been established in 1938 by the Swiss. The name "Jiri" came
from the name of the Swiss city of "Zürich."
