Money belt with mylar blanket

This is an idea that I have had but not yet acted on. I have been trying to find ways of cutting down bulk without sacrificing gear.

I wear a belt, carry my Leatherman Wave on it, and have been getting small packs as well to carry on it. I'm trying to eliminate the need for a back pack. To have all my essentials on me, without looking like I've got Batman's utility belt on. I have posted about vests in my goal to achieve no pack and not to much around my belt.

OK, so to the point. Because I wear a belt why not get one of those money belts with the hidden zipper compartment and keep a mylar blanket in it. I think it would fit but not sure. For one you would always have it on you. One less thing to stuff in one of my belt packs, leaving room for other gear.

What do you think of this, anyone have experience with money belts ? This is just something thats been going through my head in an effort to down size my pack.

Money belts are meant to be worn under your pants. They not for holding up your pants. I've worn them on a few trips and I found them to be uncomfortable.

You could probably find something more comfortable to hold a mylar blanket.

I think the OP is talking about one of these

Not one of these

Sounds like a great idea - keep us posted if it works.

FWIW, I've read a bunch of negative stuff recently about those mylar emergency blankets.

A quick search brought up this:

http://www.warriortalk.com/showthread.php?30215-Get-rid-of-mylar-blankets!

though that's not the post I originally read (and I have a slight aversion to Warrior Talk). My original source suggested that a trash bag would be a much better shelter/personal blanket in a pinch.

I think it's probably true that most of the people who recommend them, or indeed carry them (myself included!) haven't tried staying warm outside using one, and I'm not at all sure they're worth carrying on-body for just their less direct purposes (e.g., partitioning inside a car).

Just something to think about before you go investing a ton of time.

your likely not going to get a mylar/heat sheet in those types of belts, a few bills is what they are designed for

I think w/ the right gear choices you could come up w/ a pretty complete kit w/o the "batman" effect

No way.....:thumbdn::thumbdn: They are very usefull, and a proven piece of gear. Trash bags dont reflect heat like a space blanket. They can save your life. That post on warrior talk you linked to is pure BS IMO. Used for a lean to with a fire, you dont need anything else. Anyone who doubts a mylar blanket, come out with me, and Ill sweat you out of the dang shelter. Too noisy? Gimme a break. lol :D If you are in a survival situation you wanna be quiet?

This looks like it could be useful, though my concern would be that whatever is stored inside those compartments could print.

Besides which, I have enough holsters on my belt for it to be incompatible for me to use, interesting idea though.

The best type of blanket to buy will be the Adventure Medical Kits (AMK) Heatsheets, two person (large) version. The tiny Bivy Bag may also be worthy of consideration.

 Not sure what you mean "could print" ?

I've been trying to go packless but the problem I have is with water. It's one of the most important pieces of gear IMO and it's not easily carried without some sort of pack or shoulder carrier.

As far as the money belt-I wore a nylon web version for about a year. The belt will very easily get bulky if you put too much in it. I typically used it to carry a couple of bills when I was in New Orleans, and I had to fold them long-ways so they would fit. If you were going to carry a mylar blanket, you would have to refold it to fit. Tricky at best, I think.

For the water without a pack issue that Shotgun posed: Camelbak makes a shirt for bikers that has a hydration sleeve built in. I still think I would prefer a small hydration pack so that I can take it off easily to refill, or just in case I wanted to take it off for whatever other reason. http://camelbak.com/Sports-Recreation/Packs/2011-Racebak-Mens.aspx
