Some of you may be wondering how I acquired an antique khukuri when my wife is no longer working and our income has been reduced. Some of you, especially those who donated khuks for auction for my benefit, may feel puzzled or even betrayed.

The khuk in question cost me $31.00 plus shipping. This can be be verified. Probably the bargain of the decade, as far as I'm concerned.

Now to the heart of the matter: A few days ago I received a substantial monetary settlement for injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in July of 2000. I do not need, nor will I keep any money that Uncle sends me from the auctions. I had planned to quietly return it to Uncle and ask him to donate it to a charity of his choice, but circumstances have required me to make this public.

I do not have the words to express my deep appreciation to those of you who donated khukuries for my benefit, as well as those who bid on them. You have demonstrated that good will is not dead in our world.

My wife, Hope, and I are still badly in need of all the good wishes, thoughts, prayers and smoke that can be sent our way. She is still in the hospital. I don't know if this is too late to reverse the auctions, or what course may be taken. Someone else will have to determine that.

Awaiting your replies,

I view this as good news. The kindness offered up brings great rewards to those who gave. Mike, you have set things straight and what you have done brings great rewards to you.

I played only middle man -- khukuris and money were sent directly to those involved.

If nobody has a favorite charity or good cause to redirect the money to we can always send it back to those who provided us the vehicle -- the kamis and sarkis.

Stay tuned.

Mike, this too sounds like good news to me. I hope and pray that your wife heals real soon.

I've got an idea. Bladeforums has a link to: American Liberty Partnership: http://www.libertyunites.org/ maybe the money could be sent to one of the charities listed there..... It's an idea for everyone to consider and I would love to hear what others come up with.

Mike,

That is great news... and my prayers are still going out for your wife.

I would agree that sending the money to the kamis/sarkis would be a nice gift for those whose products bring us together...

God Bless,

Alan

Got an email from one of the good guy donors this AM wanting his funds to go into sort of a crisis fund for the kamis and sarkis -- give it when most needed. I explained to him the money would probably last a week in such a fund as these folks live in crisis on a daily basis. Even though we pay our kamis and sarkis about 4 or 5 times what they would normally earn this still amounts to only about 40 or 50 cents per hour on average and that doesn't go very far.

I spent about 3 weeks at BirGorkha on a daily basis and every day I was there a couple or three kamis and/or sarkis would hit me, Pala or Gelbu up for a loan or advance. They usually got it. One of the problems with this practice is if the loan or advance gets too high sometimes the kamis find it easier to sneak away in the middle of the night and leave us holding the bag. Kumar got away with four or five hundred USD -- a couple of months wages for him.

Nope. Don't give it another thought. You can't stop living just because things are bad, and I for one don't expect you to:)

Great news about the settlement--last thing you need to worry about when someone is sick is how to pay the rent!! I will still pray for you and your wife also. :)

Excellent timing on the settlement! My prayers are still with you and your wife. I can only echo what Rob said. Life goes on and so should we. Keep us posted on your wife's progress, as we are anxious for good news.

As an alternative, I might suggest the Gurkha Trust. Information about it is available on the Net.

Uncle is right, the prayers are what matter the most.
