A couple of nights ago, I spotted this creature scurrying across several gardens near my house. What puzzled me is that mongoose is not common in suburban areas, especially in a well established residential area.

I would have thought the mongoose is commonly found on the fringes of forested areas where the food chain is more to their liking.

At first, I thought it was a squirrel but when it scooted across the road and into a drain, I could see its unusually long, big tail and longer body.

What makes such a creature find refuge in a residential area?

When I lived in Okinawa they were everywhere. They are fearless little animals, I had one come out and squeak at me when rideing my bicycle to the Air Force base.

We had a badger living in a culvert under the "paved" road on the edge of our subdivision, which is just out of town. The neighborhood dogs went nuts, the kids were fascinated, and the adults spent time trying to keep their kids from crawiling in and petting it! After a while, it just couldn't stand all the attention, and left. I'm afraid he just couldn't handle "urban" life.
