Monkey Fists...

As a big fan of lanyards on my small Gent's folders, I usually tie a hangman's noose. I've got the noose on my two Willam Henry's for instance and it helps with removal from the pocket.

However, I placed this monkey fist on my little CRKT fixed blade recently. Disregarding practicality, I like the look and thought I'd share a photo.

I have been toying with the idea of doing this with my Spyderco Civilian, but a longer length of cord. A new-age kusari gama of sorts!

Patricb,
That looks realy cool. How can I learn to tie these and others like the turkshead, hangmans noose, etc.

I too like the Monkey's Fist. I have done it for several of my knives.

Tom, I wish I could remember the sites, but I printed out several diagrams of the monkey fist when first tying the knot. It took a few tries, but once I got the hang of it, it was fairly easy. I put a marble in the knot and they seem to hold up better and also look neater. Try a google search for "monkey fist" or "monkey fist knot" and you'll find several resources.

RE: the hangman's noose, I'm fairly certain that Chris Reeve's site has the noose diagram. I also remember seeing the hangman's noose a few times here at bladeforums as well.

Sebenza's Knot

I like the hangman's noose a lot as well.

Hope that helps.

patrickb, I do not know. I have copied this animation/link from a German-language knifeforum.

Dumb question, or maybe not. Where does everyone buy their string for their lanyards? Is there a special kind that works best? Thanks!

You're the man Esav!!

That is a supremely overlooked survival gem! The art of good knot tying.

Yes...very nice animation...

Roper's is great. I remember getting knots from them back in 95-96, old in internet time.

Anyway, try a smaller cord - and pull it tighter. Get a crochet hook to help pull the cord tight.

Just yesterday I made one of these out of 1" rope with a big rock inside...definitely a weapon...bigger than my hand, and a lot heavier...

One thing I hate about Brigade Quartermasters is how I can go to their site just to browse, for crying out loud, and end up spending money ... go to the link and search on "knots" and see these:

FORTY KNOTS™ PRACTICE CARD
Official Boy Scouts of America issue and the handiest guide you can find for learning to tie knots.

KNOT KNOW HOW PLAYING CARDS
In addition to having a lot of fun (“What are those?”, “These are knot playing cards.” “If they’re not playing cards, what are they?”…), you can learn 54 useful and/or decorative knots. Much more practical than a Knot Tying Board. Excellent for survival kits.

I tried with 3mm cord but found I liked the look of the paracord better, but as you pointed out, I had trouble 'finishing' the knot, i.e., what to do with the end piece? Any tips for me? I'll take a look at the crochet hook.

I'd love to see a pic of your monster monkey fist. I saw one at a gun & knife show once that was sold/marketed as a self defense weapon. It looked like maybe a golf ball in the middle. It was pretty heavey nonetheless.

Thx for the tips.
