Last night, on the documentary "Life", (which my 2 1/2 year old loves) they featured Mono Lake in CA. The salt concentration and resulting desolation was really interesting. It looked like a beautiful place to paddle a canoe.....but then they focused on the Alkali Fly habitat! There were millions of these things swarming all over. Does anyone have any experience in this lake area, and how do you battle those little buggers?

I've driven by it 100's of times on the way the to fish the Eastern High Sierra country, I really need to stop one of these days.

I went there when I was on a vacation in California. Really strange place, I've never been anywhere else like it. I don't know if Salt Lake in Utah is also like that or not. The pillars or whatever they are referred to as are pretty neat, but the flies are just no joke. It's the type of place that's interesting to stop and see, but you wouldn't want to paddle it or spend a major amount of time there IMO.

If you get the chance, go visit it, it may not be the same in the coming years due to the continued diversion of the feeder streams.

Interesting trivia -

High Plains Drifter was filmed at Mono Lake.
