I ordered a 25" Kobra from Uncle Bill. When I did I asked him to send me a heavy one, for a Kobra anyway, if he could. Well he sent out a 25" Kobra by Sher that comes in at 37 ozs. I have a couple of other Kobras that are right at a ounce per inch. The handle is a nice size for my hand which I was somewhat concerned about before I got it. Needless to say I wanted a secure grip. It is blade heavy but still moves well in the hand. The blade itself is well made and straight over the whole length. I do need to sharpen it, a bit on the dull side.Another concern that I had was the sheath. I had read other reviews that talked about problems of putting a blade that long into the sheath. This one fits better then several of my other Khurk, very happy on that one. It just sits there and asks to cut stuff. I have some pics along with some pics from my other Khurks that I have to get up. Yet another beautiful Khurk. You would think that after a few I would stop being suprised. Thanks all.:D

Not always, but generally Sher leans to the heavy side -- not as much as he once did, though.

Sher does a great job as I see it. He may not lean toward the heavy side like he used to (I think Kumar inherited some of the heavy side) but he does provide a real good balance between the light and heavy. Excellent handles and an almost convex edge make his work hard to beat.

I don't recall the maker, but I have one of the same size & weight.

I convexed the edge more fully this past spring
(from the center of the width to the edge),
& in the process narrowed & contoured the curve under the angle.
This brought vertical a blade that balanced upright with a slight tilt.
When not in use, this blade will eventually have
a resting place that shows off the balance.

When I was in the high grit finish sanding I suddenly
decided the blade needed fullers on the forward length.
I started hand sanding the fullers to give just a gentle hint,
but the more I added the more I wanted.

I stopped about halfway through doing the fuller on each side
because I became unsure of the final fuller shape I wanted.
As much metal as I felt like I was removing,
the scale tells me it's less than an ounce so far.

I need to get back to that one sometime.
Too many of my projects halfway done.
(One of the negatives of ADD)

Kumar, Sher's younger brother, was the first (EDIT) of the two brothers (END EDIT) to be hired at what's now Bir Ghorka. Kumar has a history of tending toward the light side and was the first to turn a worn out file into a khuk "in house". This made for a problem as Sher is the older brother and used to bossing Kumar around. Except Kumar has seniority in Bir Ghorka.

One result is that Sher was finally hired about this time of the year or a little later to produce orders of kagas katnes (4 or 5 inch "paper cutters" ) for the Christmas rush. He did so. And he made many of them. And ihat was all that he made! Dozens, hundreds of them. Which undoubtedly seemed like thousands or millions to him. Then once that was done, he was allowed to make REAL khuks, which for some reason ( :D ) he tended to overbuild. By the time a year had passed, he got to where they were only a little thicker than anyone elses.

So now you know why Sher is identified with the heavyweights and Kumar the lightweights.

Thanks for the info all. The more I handle it the more it grows on me. Much like all of them I guess. I tend to like the heavier blades so far. The funny thing is that most of the Khurks that I have so far are by R.R. and I have been very pleased with them all. Maybe there is a special 20" AK by Sher around someplace.

So, is the Sher 20" a villager? Steel hardware? (Sorry, I've been polishing and feeding the handles on my 12" villagers, and have fallen in love. Again.).

Here's a quick snap of mine.

It's by Sanu.

See my notes above re its current state.

You can get an idea of the fuller so far.

I will have to check where mine balances at exactly. That is looking good, it will be well worth finishing.
