Caught this not so little bugger this morning rubbing his greedy little legs together on the flyscreen in my kitchen. Certainly one of the bigger ones I've had inside the house. That's my AMS his carcass is lying on. He was a bit longer than the logo on the blade, so that makes him over an inch long! Or her.

I've seen big skeeters, but they've always been thin as air... that thing has substance. And with those colors, it looks like a mosquito and a mud wasp spawned a mutant blood-sucker from hell.
 
My research shows it is Toxorhynchites Speciosus the largest mosquito in the world. Lives exactly where you do. Does not suck blood it lives on nectar. It is actually beneficial as its larvae eat other mosquito larvae.

Nice spotting! I have seen a few of these around the place, and occasionally they venture inside. For some reason they like to land on me at night when I'm trying to sleep.

Every time someone from Down Under posts a pic of the local creatures it makes me happy that I don't live there. Everything looks like a prehistoric version of something we have here. Probably all getting into that Vegemite crap and mutating.

How does someone work for the Australian Tourist Department?
What do those posters say?

Seriously, it looks like a beautiful place but is there anything that isn't designed to cause the extinction of all mankind. Hope you guys all stay safe. For now I will just enjoy the pics of Australia.

Hey Rob, your G10 location on that AMS looks to have serious issues, better send it to Garth for closer inspection! ;)
 
Last summer, here in Iowa, I saw one that looked similar to what Rob posted. Never before have I seen a mosquito that big. It was the size of a medium daddy long legs spider, black or brown with yellowish bands. I also saw a genuine 6" Praying Mantis , are we reverting back to prehistoric insect sizes???
