At the end of June I flew out with my girlfriend and my grandfather to my aunt and uncle's ranch in Montana for a week. It's a 300+ acre lot in Superior, which is about 60 miles from Missoula. It's beautiful there- they have a main house for their family, a 2 bedroom bunk house, and a big saloon that my uncle built to entertain guests and business partners. Here's the hand-made bar that my uncle put in it. The saloon still isn't finished:

There was also plenty to do every day- they have Polaris Ranger ATV's that were fun to drive around the property and up into the mountains with, and he has a shooting area marked out. I got to shoot plenty of guns, including a Henry Repeating .22, Remington .223, Winchester .22 from the very early 1900's, Browning .22LR pistol, and my favorite, a Kimber stainless TLE .45ACP. This trip let me fire a gun for the first time, and these were all very nice guns! I got to shoot three mags through the 1911, and I'm already in love with it!

Here's a couple pictures of the 1911 taken just before a field strip and cleaning:

Here's my grandfather's Sig p225 9mm that he carried when he was an Air Marshal:

And the Browning .22 pistol:

They have 15 or so horses, and my girlfriend (the equestrian) and myself (indifferent to horses) both had fun riding. Here's my grandfather, who was in the military from World War II through Vietnam and later in law enforcement sitting helplessly at the mercy of horses in an ATV :D:

Here's a cougar that my uncle shot in 2004. It was the largest cat shot that year, but the taxidermist didn't have a form large enough for skin so without consent he cut down the hide to fit a smaller form. The result is a pretty ugly, lanky cat that's much smaller than the original product. Luckily, he still has a picture of the fresh-killed cougar and a plaque for it:

Kind of looks like one of our moderators, huh? Hope they weren't related

Twice I got to go up a mountain on in one of their ranch trucks. It's very narrow in points and there's quite a drop-off (down the whole mountain!). One slip of the wheel and it's over Johnny. Once you get to the top, you get to see the beautiful Diamond Lake and hike up further to yet another beautiful lake and an awesome mountain view:

Here's me, my girlfriend, my aunt, cousins, and the other two guests on a bridge going up the mountain:

Here's the lake at the top:

They rented a boat on lake Flathead and we spent a day cruising along on it. It's the largest lake in the western US and we only saw two other boats on it the whole time! I can't imagine what a zoo that place would be in Massachusetts. Later in the week we took rafts 5 or 6 miles downriver to fish, but we didn't catch anything. It was still plenty of fun.

Leaving was hard. I could spend my life on that ranch, but now I'm back to Massachusetts. Luckily, I have plenty of souvenirs. I brought about 60 shells from the different calibers I shot back in my luggage. I got an inspection notice inside and my zip tie had been removed and replaced. The guy that ended up seeing all that brass and three knives must have been pretty suspicious :D

I'm glad you had a great trip:thumbup: , but I'm not seeing any pics:(

Looks like a very nice trip. You don't often see a duty Sig P225. It is one fine handling firearm.

I hope, and I’m sure you do, cherish trips like that where you’ll remember them all your life.

It looks like you had a GREAT time!!! Thank you for sharing pix.

It makes me look forward even more to my time out in Montana!!

Your grandpa's living the good life.

And it sounds like he earned it.

Glad you had some summer fun!:)

Just think, NR-
Montana State University in Bozeman offers as good of an education as Northeastern........:D

I used to love Montana. My parents and I went there a number of times during the summers, nearly 20 years ago. Great place.

If I were you, NR, and I had the choice of either Massachusetts and the freedom of a ranch in Montana, I'd latch on to your uncle and not let go!!
Seriously.

Oh and nice guns and views and all that, but that saloon he's making is simply beyond words. I'm in love.

Familiar stomping grounds, that Flathead Lake area. I assume you stopped in Polson?;)
Here's a pic I took overlooking the Kerr Res.

It has given me the travel bug to see real mountains again.

I'm a native of PA and all we have here are hills in comparison.
