Has anyone here ever run across a bastard file with the brand name Montfort on it? I can't find any info online about the company, but am going to try to make a camp knife out of it.

Is it old, old? Most new files you’ll find are case hardened and unsuitable for knives because the center is still soft and unhardening.

This is pretty old. I got it from my step-father's estate about 20 years ago. He was an antique dealer, world war II vet (Battle of the Bulge) and old-school craftsman, so most of his tools were good quality. The only references I can find on Google for "Montfort" are for a fairly modern industrial grinding tool company.

I would think you'd be good to go. Old USA files that I know of were through hardened and usable as blade steel.
Have fun!
