I had heard allot about Moore Maker so I though I would give them a try. I purchased the #2301 Buffalo stockman and to say the least, I was very impressed!!!

Now Moore Makers knives are made for them by Queen and Camillus. I had heard that the Camillus ones were not quite as nice. This is believable considering that their quality control is usually not very good (at best). It has always been that way (more so in recent years). Queen has always has been pretty diligent in their quality control department (for the most part). Well I decided that despite Camillus' reputation that I would give it a try. I spoke with Dave Moore (very friendly, courteous and "personable") and He assured me that if I had any problems, or was not happy he would remedy it.

Well when I first received these knives all I could say was......WOW!!!!

These were real beauties!!! The fit and finish were excellant, the Buffalo handles were very shiny, well "executed" very tasteful!!! The 1095 blades had "razor" sharp edges that did not need any "touching up" whatsoever. Now the blades are at a 56 rockwell (+ or -1), but when you consider the wisdom for a lower blade heat treat it makes allot of sense! You can strop the blade on a belt, or a saddle while out in the field!! At 56 rockwell it will hold a decent edge, but be easy to sharpen, not that's thinking!

the "walk and talk" of both springs was excellant to say the least!! The handles "fit like a glove" in my hand!! I was very impressed with these!

I was a "little" skeptical before I received these knives as the cost was not cheap by any means ($58.00), but when I received them I realized they were well worth the money!!! The Moore's really did a good job of getting (convincing) camillus to make a quality product (which Camillus can do, except they usually do not want to invest the money into doing so, different story).

I would highly recommend these guys: www.mooremaker.com And if you have any problems they are really good about helping! They are one of the few knife makers that truly care about their reputation and their customers!!!

Kudos to Moore Maker!!! :D

Glad you like it. I have several Mooremakers and love them all, it's just about all I carry these days. Don't forget to keep a thin film of oil on the blade---I use mineral oil, olive oil, or vegetable oil. After carrying it for a while, the buffalo horn will look a little beat up, a thin coat of mineral oil will make it look like new.

Just went to the moore maker catalog, Looks good. I dont get the prices though. If indeed they are made by Cal, and que. why the cost? neither company is known for higher end products. Secondly, Why are they called Moore Maker. Many, and I do mean many of us custom makers have maler under our name, Never once have I herd a custom makers name used and then followed by maker, even thats whats on most blades. For and example go to http://home.earthlink.net/~michaellovett/

Gramps, I would venture to say they probably are on par with the remingtons made by camillus.

mlovett, the reason they are higher is because to have camillus make better quality knives costs more. As far as why they are called "moore maker" is becuase the Moore's are the ones having them made by both camillus and queeen with their name.
Schrade, camillus, colonial and many others have been making knives for others, and "one another" for years. The cutlery business has always been that way. This is nothing new.
The Moores have to pay more to have these knives made for them as the quality controls are higher and in turn it (the knives) costs more.
In the end its the difference between buying yugo versus chevy.

I think you totaly mis-understood my question. I know who they are, nd who their having make their knives. My question is, Why are they called Moore Mader, as a company name. Not as who makes them. As an example, My Knives are marked, M.S. Lovett Maker. Bob's knives are marked R.W. Loveless Maker. Ive never hearde one of our knives refered to as a Lovett Maker, Or a Loveless maker. Perhaps in describing who make the kinife but not as a title. I hear people around here call the knives Moore Makers. I guess I own an Impala Chevy Maker. Thanks m. Lovett

you did ask why they are high priced if they were made by camillus and queen.

As far as why everyone calls them this, perhaps its just "catchy"?

The name of the company is Moore Maker...so they use that brand name on all of their products including their tools as well as the knives.

BTW, just ordered the smaller buffalo horn stockman, #2300.....will be interesting to try it as a user. I have several of the MM knives made by Queen, but this will be my first Camillus made model.

I wonder where the buffalo horn is actually sourced?

probably africa like most of it. Its usually water buffalo.

Actually they did make their own spurs, bits, etc. it is written on their "about" page.

rev,

I probably wasn't very clear. What I was attempting to say, was that the MAKER part of their name doesn't DENOTE that they did or did not MAKE the object......it's JUST part of the company name....Moore Maker.

Bill

Bill, I actually understood you just fine. I was just saying that they did make some of their own products.

thanks for the claification guys. Several of my friends have them, including collector, dealer Jack Puttnam, and Texas Ranger, Real ranger, not base ball, Ranger Ramose. Nice knives. Check out to logo on my home page, and you will see why the question. Thank's for all the info. Mike Lovett http://home.earthlink.net/~michaellovett/

The MooreMaker oval logo is very typical of a saddle maker's mark. In other words, it is very common to see the word "Maker" in the middle of a stamp. For instance, my saddle was made by Price McLaughlin in the early 70s and the oval stamp reads...

Price McLaughlin
Maker
Saginaw, TX

...very similiar to the Moore stamp.

Being that MooreMakers are considered authentic Western knives and aim their marketing efforts toward the working cowboy, I'm sure their intention was to use a very traditional stamp and the name MooreMaker was coined by novices and just stuck.

I carry a Moore Hoof Pick knife for trail riding and around the barn. I wouldn't think of carrying anything else.

Best,
Tom

Thank's, Just stuck makes sence, as my Logo is M.S.Lovett Maker, Bob's is R.W.Loveless Maker. As far as I know, No one calls my knives Lovettmaker, or Bob's LovelessMaker Most of the post missed the question entirely. Never have I heard a company called maker even though it is in the logo. Many, many of us use it, and it has been used for centuries. Why the mis nomer with this company is beyond me. Most of the cowboys here call them moore maker, but many saddels carry the same type of stamp, Never heard them called maker either, even though they obviously are. Now I find out Moore doesn't even make them. Some how they have many people convinced around here that they are custom makers. THEY are NOT!!!Simply over priced jobed out factory knives. M. Lovett

I think that back in time Mooremaker started out making its own items--for fencing, etc. and all of those items were called Mooremaker. When they wanted to sell a line of knives, they kept the same logo although the knives were not made by them. When the knives first came out, many thought that they were a custom maker. Also, I have seen some catalogs and web sites that state that the knives are made in Texas. That is not the case.
