Moore maker?

I just recieved this model#5204 made in 2009,I believe made by bear and sons.but don't understand how spear would work properly View attachment 2543302that's one weird cutting angle.
It would look very ugly if you straightened it in the overall plane of the handle!!
It would look broke-backed!!!
I have one - it works well as is!!

It has the same cutting surface on a flat table as a cotton sampler, not that I I have a cotton sampler but from pictures. I thought maybe I have a defective knife.but using it in other situations other than a flat surface would be fine, and some cases preferred.

Its not a spear blade, its a spey blade, and its not intended for use on a flat surface.....

Ooo that's purdy! Nice one oldy!

Ive got me a case and can't get it out of my pocket. It's just the perfect pattern! That spey is what I use to open stuff that you don't want to stab by accident.

For instance, over the last couple months it's opened a few thousand pounds of Pollock and cod, infinite numbers of fry bags, and any other things that need a swift shallow slice. It's great for cutting up cardboard and even peeling large onions.

Unfortunately my yearly lenten duties are over but the knife served very well! Mostly the spey blade.

The angle of the blade works great. The sheepsfoot is still my favorite, but that angled spey blade is super useful.

I have a S&M sowbelly, and it's pretty standard for the blades to come out of the frame at an angle that matches the curve of the backspring.

I agree with the assessment made by others. The Spey is in the plane of the end of the curved frame and is correct.

Weren’t the 2009 5000 series made by Queen?

Yes spey my bad, queen made them apparently until 2006 then bear and sons after that from what I have read.i have cut with it that is why I was somewhat confused about the angle, but in other situations it is as steve says,it keeps your knuckles from the objects.neat knife never had a configuration like this before.it is also well put together

What's the 3rd blade on your sowbelly, along with the spey and clip shown in your photo in the original post?
I would have guessed it would have a sheepsfoot, but the closed blade in the photo looks like another clip to me.

It's called the moose pattern, only 2 blades.not the most comfortable to hold, but I'm not sure if I've seen a spey on a moose before, but haven't had a wide array of them either.

I have been trying to find that out,it says that queen stopped for the most part in 2006,but some ambiguity in the statement I read.it sounded like queen still made a few for moore maker, maybe the 5000 series was one.

Sorry that I'm so blind! o_O
I thought the open clip on the Schrade knife in the "background picture" in your original photo was actually an open blade of your knife.
Fortunately, I have an appointment with the eye doctor in 2 weeks!

I have a 2009 5301 that is identical to a much older 5301, aside from bone color. I thought Queen made Moore Maker almost until they closed their doors.
Queen may not have made the majority of Moore Maker knives since 2005, but they still made the 5000 series for a long time after that. The quality of the Queen-made Moore Maker knives is significantly better than the Bear-made models, and also better than the few Utica models I have handled. The Utica models I have seen were at least as good as Case. And from the appearance of the frames and blades, I think the current production 5000 series are made by Case.

I believe Bear-made Moore Maker had a B in the tang stamp, and Utica-made Moore Maker had a U in the tang stamp. The delrin handled Moore Maker used to be made by Camillus, but others have made them since Camillus closed their doors (I think Bear did at least some of them).

I tried finding the post again it was in bladeforums, someone had written moore maker and was told that after 2006 queen for the most part stopped making their knives, and bear and sons took over.it also stated that queen still made some of the higher quality moore makers.thats all I have found

I found this on an outdoor forum, dated 2011:

Hello All,

My name is Leonard Secrest, I am the internet guy for Moore Maker. Moore Maker was started by Wayland and Glenard Moore back in the early 80's and mainly consisted of dehorners and fencing equipment for several years, around 1989 the Moore's decided to try knives. Queen cutlery has made the bulk of our knives from the beginning and continue to do so, however when we introduced the less expensive "working" knives Camillus made them for us. When Camillus went out of business we started with Bear and Sons in Alabama. Utica and Canal are also making some knives for us and Boker has made 2 also. In my opinion Utica is making some of the highest quality knives out there right now. Moore Maker owns the jiggs and dies and materials for most of our current knives, but all of our knives are contract manufactured, all of the materials with the exception of some stag and rams horn for handles are American made with American materials. The only exception to this was the 2 knives Boker made for us in Solingen.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.
