I recently picked up a Mooremaker Moose second off of Fleabay. I know there was a post or two about these recently, but a couldn't find them in a quick search.

For anybody thinking about picking one up, DO IT! :) I read the description very carefully, and was a little hesitent about getting a factory second, but I figured what the h*ll, I really like the Moose design and it came with a free MM belt scabbard. After receiveing it, I can't figure out why it was a second. Walk and talk is great, there's no blade rub, and no blade play. Both blades were pretty sharp (just not as sharp as I'd make them) My guess would be one of two things.

First, the scale colors seem to match pretty well, but there's some black speckles throughout both scales. (Nothing that I would consider bad by any means)

Second, there's a small nick on the inside edge of one of the brass liners. This may be why it was considered a second, or it may be MM's way of marking it as a second.

My question is, has anyone else here picked one up, and if so, do you have the same type of mark? (I'll try and get some pictures up soon)

Thanks, Dan

I recently bought 2 moore makers as seconds off of Ebay also. I bought a 4 1/2 inch stockman and later I bought a sowbelly. The stockman was perfect, I also couldn't see why it was a second. The sowbelly had a loose blade but I gave the knife a tap with a rubber mallet and the now blade is tight and has good walk and talk. both of my knives also have that nick in the liner. I had both knives come in the 3 days. If your thinking about getting one of these, just make sure you read the description very carefully and email the seller with any questions. I'm very happy with my knives.

I have a stag handle moore maker trapper that I like, and I ended up picking up a second one from the guy you are talking about. It's got a hairline crack in the backside stag scale, but everything is tight and works fine. Great stag too.

Knife itself is sound, and works just fine. It does have a tiny nick ground into one of the liners like you say. Still sitting here new, cause I've been carrying the other one.

I like my two MMs. 6th and 7th down in the left column. The top is Queen made. The other is Camillus made.

Awesome. Thanks for the heads up Steve. I'm very happy with the Moose I bought. I got mine in about 3 days also. Actually, it was 2. Came with a nice belt scabbard.

Good info to know about that liner mark also. At least now we know how MM marks their seconds. It's almost un-noticeable.

Guyon, how do you like the Camillus made MM? I was thinking about picking up a horn stockman. I like how the main blade looks.

The first MM I bought was a buffalo horn handled 3 1/4 inch stockman. I bought that new, not as a second and its very good knife. I really like the way it feels in my hand, I think its made with higher tolerances then the normal camillus.

I agree. It's a very nice knife for the money. I also agree that the MMs seem better built than some other Camillus slipjoints.

You might try Ruff's Saddle Shop in Umatilla, FL. He stocks Moore Makers. He used to do a catalog business way back, but he now has an eBay store at: http://stores.ebay.com/Cowboy-Knife-Sales Frank Ruff is a good guy with whom to do business (4755 feedbacks with 100% positive). He used to post on BF a long time ago, but I haven't seen him around in a long while.

The Camillus made knives are not long for this world, what with the closing of the Camillus factory. Get them while you can. However, I will say that the Queen made knives have a little bit better fit and finish. They are also more expensive though. If I were going to buy one right now, I'd get a Camillus-made knife with the black horn. Once those are gone, they're gone.

Edited to add: I wonder who Moore Maker will get to pick up that side of production (if anyone). I emailed them a while back, and they were hopeful Camillus would pull through. Alas, that wasn't the case.

What make is knife A-5? Pretty color, and I don't recognize the shield.

Nice rack of stockman all the way around!

I second Frank Ruff - I've bought a couple from him. Mainly because he's an old cowboy and I used to rodeo too. Good guy to deal with on knives.

Schatt & Morgan. Got that one from Ron Ryder at Cutters and Collectors.

He has some left. Superb fit and finish and excellent walk and talk. ATS-34 steel to boot.

From http://www.cuttersandcollectors.com/schattone.html "Schatt round end stockman. 043109. This knife is a beauty, like all of the Schatt and Morgan knives. It is 4" folded. This pattern in this quality is a rarity these days. Three blades, ATS 34 marked clip main, sheepsfoot secondary, and modified pen. The knife is heavy enough to feel like what it is, quality through and through. Genuine wormgroove antique green bone handles. Half stops, with fantastic walk and talk. Of course this knife is made in America. This pattern was run in 1999..."

I have to agree with Guyon about Frank Ruff. I've purchased several Moore Maker knives from him on Ebay, and have been completely satisfied with both the knives he sells and how fast he shops them out.

Recommended highly.

Nice array of stockmans guyon. Who makes those ranchers, the next two to the las on the left? Is the last one on the left a Cripple Creek? The shield looks like a buffalo

This thread is a couple of year's old. You may want to send a quick PM to Guyon to bring his attention to it.

I did.Thanks. I got the 5300 and the sheepsfoot is a bit slow. There are no grind marks on the liners. It's a keeper anyways. I talked to Dave Moore and he said send it back, because my main reason or complaint was the main blade was a nail breaker to open. I was thinking the crisp edge on the nail nick was too rounded over from the polishing operation. I soaked it in mineral oil and used marvel lube on the joints and it's just fine now. I can't send it back, I've grown attached. Pinned shields on these. Nobody does that anymore. I don't even think Queen pins their own shields, but they do for MM's
