Moose Hunting

One of my hunting friends has a moose draw this year. Yesterday he told me that him & his son had called out a bull the night before but it was 550 yards and right at dark. So the three of us, including his 4 yr old son, went back to that same spot after work. We sat down and my friend let out some sexy sounding cow calls. About 12 minutes later I told him I could here branches snapping in the timber, then a few grunts.. A few moments later the bull stepped out in the open ~120 yards away. Bang, dead moose. His son was pretty pumped as he saw the whole thing.
So we shoot some field photos (on his camera mine was at home:rolleyes:) and then field dress the beast. We went back to town to drop off his son, fetch a chainsaw & moose skidder (ATV:D). Well long story short buy the time we got the moose skidded out, loaded in the truck, drive home, hang and skin moose it was getting late.
Here are a couple pics I did manage to snap (sorry about the lack of field photos - but I know the rules and there is a knife pic):

The photo of the blade is the second knife that I ever made almost two years ago (I keep selling all the nicer ones I've made since! One of these days I have to keep a more recent knife for myself:)) This knife was made from 1/8" trim saw from the local sawmill. It holds a decent edge but not quite as good as the O1, 1080, & 1084 that I use now. During the skinning it did get touched up a few times on a steel - and still shaving sharp at the end. And anyone who has skinned out a moose can attest to how tough thier hide is!

I'm going to bed earlier tonight:)

Sounds like an exciting time for all of you, including the youngster! Great you got to skin it with your own handmade knife.

right on Bruce... congrats to you and your buddies... i bet he was excited... moose in the freezer is a good thing...:D nice knife too... :)

A cordless Sawsall would be a neater operation !
You're lucky it didn't end up in 3' of cold water.
Good hunting and good eating !!

Excellent! What weapon anchored him and where was he hit? Bullet? Did it need to be tracked?

One of my dreams is a Moose hunt. Moose is my favorite of all meats.
Great job!
Thanks for sharing.

7-08 with a 140 Accubond - hit high in the shoulder. It disrupted his spine and the only way he would have hit the ground any faster is if his legs were shorter! No tracking.
The bullet went through both shoulders and was under the hide on the off-side.

Do you have a grinder for all that?

Ummm,,, Moose chilli. I made deer chilli two days ago.

Very nice too bad you forgot the camera. Nice looking pile of meatI was lucky enough to draw a moose.Been at it pretty hard without any luck so far. I have camera and knife ready for when I pull the trigger. Thanks for posting (Im in Revelstoke)

How much meat do you figure you'll get?

The 4 quarters skinned wieghed 472lbs at the butcher. So after deboning and trimming I suspect we'll get ~250-300lbs of wrapped meat.

Good luck with your LEH dboles - lt us know how you make out!
