'Twas a bittersweet moment today...
Got the Moose Knife back (from the passaround).
I was hoping somebody would've kept it...
I really like the work Dwayne did on the sheath. Cleaned it up pretty good. I was going for more of a rustic look (which the mustard patina really does well) but it certainly does not detract from that and Dwayne's craftmanship is top notch. Hope it's goin' well, buddy!
Anyway, the handle was quite tarnished when I got it back, and since I wasn't pleased with the finish in the first place, I went ahead and stripped it down to bare antler and then sanded and buffed it. The compound I have now is a little better than what I had before. So, whereas the handle was a bit yellowish before, it is now restored to its lavender/white/rose tri-color - which I really like - and is now quite smooth. I'm undecided if I'll add a glossy coat finish or not. For now, it's been waxed.
Here's a pic:
Now for the blade...it was still sharp when it came - thanks Yvsa!
It needed a little touch-up so I put it to the leather stropping belt and brought it back to scary sharp.
For those who have belt sanders and leather belts here's a piece of advice: Even if you have a convex edge, sharpen all your final edges against the platen (vs. slack belt polishing). You will still have a convex edge because the leather "gives" and rounds the edge anyway. If you try using it in the slack area, you'll roll the edge too much and dull it, plus you'll wear out the belt in no time flat...
The passaround was a great experience for me. I really do enjoy your comments and criticisms. Sure, they're hard to swallow at first - especially the ones that were a result of my laziness...
But, all in all, I have learned a lot by letting you all take me to task.
Now all I need is a hunting buddy to let me stick this moose knife where it belongs...

Dan
p.s. would anybody be interested in future passarounds? Is this an acceptable idea? or I have burned everybody out? I have a few more "in the works"...
