MOP for pocket carry

So I did a wild bid on a MOP case peanut with scissors and a bail, never thinking I would win it that cheap. But I did! I'd never considered a MOP knife before but having it in my hand it's beautiful. Makes me want to use it. The bail makes me want to use it on my keychain replacing the cheap Gerber framelock there now. But the other part of me is terrified to ruin such a beautiful knife and concerned the MOP is going to be damaged badly and quickly. I'm resigned to the likelihood of scratched bolsters, but I don't want to destroy the beauty of the knife altogether in just a couple year's time.

What are you experiences using a MOP handled knife in the rough and tumble would of everyday pocket carry?

It's more durable than you would think. Obviously, if you drop it, that could be bad. However, for most in-the-pocket scenarios, it would be fine.

It is definitely not stag, but like Glen said it is tougher than it seems. Most any natural material can crack if you drop it! With that being said I have cracked more MOP scales than any other:(

I don't EDC it, but I have a nacre covered serpentine that I carry on Sundays and more dressy occasions. I drop in straight into my pocket and apart from some fine scratches on the bolsters it appears none the worse for wear. I do take care to make sure the pocket I carry it in does not contain keys or other metallic objects.

Lotta folks say they carry MOP, but I'm not certain about putting it on a key ring.

I carry a MOP handled Victorinox accountant in my shirt pocket of my scrubs along with my glasses and pens and whatever else I put in there...holds up very well.

It has no bolsters and I don't have the first crack or chip yet.

Since you got it cheap...use it like you stole it!!

As the hour go flashing by
Feel the rush while your flying high
With pearls in your pocket
Strapped to the rocket
Of stealing time
And living out of line

I regularly carry MOP-handled knives, and as has been said, it's more durable than some folks imagine. However, I wouldn't put it on a key-chain, your keys will scratch the MOP, and spoil its attractiveness

Thanks all. It's pretty much as I thought. It probably is fairly durable or never would have gained popularity as a scale material.

And it makes sense that using it as a key fob is probably going too far. Buy that bail on it is taunting me!. Case makes an abalone peanut with a bail too. Why you gotta taunt me like that Case?

You could make a tight little slip-sheath for it, that'd work I reckon

That's a good idea too. I have a small case suede sheath and I know how to sew to alter it.

My first time carrying MOP was my favorite Camillus 41 for Connor's EDC challenge. It came through a week's carry like a champ, but I will admit it was one of the first knives I carried in a slip. :o

It's not so much the durability of the handles themselves I was worried about than the possibility that banging around in my pockets would put a gouge in one or both and that sweet multi-layered prism effect would be negatively impacted.

Come to think of it, I carried this little old fella shortly after that (same slip :D):

I've carried this Gunstock from Mike Alsdorf a bunch of times since I got it about 16 months ago. No worries but I carry it in a pocket by itself with no other items. Same as I do with all my knives. It's easier to grab the knife when there's nothing else in the pocket and I can't stand it when a coin gets lodged between the blade and liner.

The pocket slip is a great idea but I've got another one to toss out there. Get yourself one of those Mother of Pearl Swayback Gents without a bail and stick that baby in your pocket.:D

At the risk of picture spamming here is the knife in question. Look at that bail. Mocking me.

I carry mine in a slip sheath. I hate to damage nice covers, regardless of the material.

Id just use that bail for a lanyard with a bead .....if that....then put it in my pocket. That thing is way too nice to let keys beat it up! Beautiful looking knife ya got there.

Yeah I have it in a slip sheath today and thought about making a lanyard in white 550 cord to hang out the side of the sheath and use it for Sunday or other more formal days.
