Mora 2/0 mod and leather sheath

Hey guys, I didn't build this knife but I did some work to it :) I didn't like the red handle it came with so I sanded that off and glued on a walnut butt cap. Oiled and CA finish. Then I did a vinegar patina on the blade. I also wasn't happy with the plastic sheath it came with so I made this one out of leather. I cut the very bottom of the plastic sheath off and inserted it in the leather one to protect the blade ( and my leg)

Why the butt cap? You oiled it before the CA? Why not just apply the CA after you sanded it? I'm a big fan of the CA finish (many aren't). How many layers did you do?

Adding the tip of the oem sheath was really smart. I'm thinking of doing similar when I build my next sheaths. :)

Good job!

I added the buttcap to make the handle just a little longer. This knife is fairly small and it just aids in handle comfort. I put a little boiled linseed oil on it first to help all the grain pop out a little more. It gives it a slightly darker tint if you do that too. I think I only put 2 or 3 coats of glue on it. I wasn't looking for a highly polished finished, mostly for water proofing. :)

Nice mods. If you want some ideas for more Mora customizing, look here:

It is where I convert a Mora to full tang.

I like that! I noticed you were catching a lot of grief for doing what you did but I think it turned out great. I get asked a lot " why did you do that?". I usually end up saying because I can. :) I have a mora companion heavy duty coming in the mail today. No plans to mod this one other than blade patina

I usually just burn off the red paint, file a few treads into the palm side of the handle (mostly so I can tell what orientation the knife is in by feel), and fill the gap under the ferrule with melted wax. I like the addition of the pommel, must add a lot to the leverage factor. The sheathes I made for my 2/0 and #1 are Kydex lined with some waxed leather. Initially the one for my 2/0 was supposed to be for my #1 but was a bit snug - had to grind it down and make a larger one. Used aluminum nails and heavy copper wire for the rivets. Left the 2/0 as is but treated it with a bit of mineral oil, the #1 is coated with polyurethane and 400 grit SiC blend.

I love my Moras

Hey heavyhanded, I like that! I just got my Mora Companion HD in the mail. This thing is a beast. I like the sheath but it didn't work left handed. I've noticed several people mention this. BUT!! I slapped the sheath in the oven for a few minutes to soften the plastic shoved the Mora back in there lefty. It works. I may make a leather one for it eventually but this will definitely do for now

Hmm... SiC/poly is a very interesting idea. I imagine it would work well with CA too.

How do you find it?

I'm trying to think of a knife that I might have that I could try this on...

You can get the SiC powder at any lapidary supply shop - have had good luck using Arrowhead. Any fine sand would probably work, but since it was handy I used the SIC. You can't really see it though it dims the finish a little - makes for a good grip.

Thanks! It is only a $15 knife...I don't know why people got so bent out of shape about it.
Anyway, Next it is going to be a folding Mora. I don't even want to think of what people will say about that idea!
